Here is another sign of the arrival of Retina(ish) displays to the next-generation MacBook Pros: in addition to new high definition cursors in the previous version, the latest Lion update has new ultra-high resolution app icons.
The new icons have appeared in 10.7.4. Previously, the top resolution for app icons was 512 x 512. Now, applications like TextEdit or Automator have icons that go up to a whooping 1024 x 1024. [Apple Insider via MacRumors]

MacBook Retina Display Teardown: Four Times the Pixels In Smaller Hardware
What’s the expected date for the launch of these new Macbooks?
We’re hoping the new MacBook Pros will be announced at WWDC on June 11th, whether these will have Retina displays or not we obviously don’t know yet.
I think we’ll see a special event in September, Mountain Lion + hardware at Apple Town Centre or Yerba Buena. June/July will be too early for 10.8 and if they can’t launch it at WWDC then they’ll want to tie it to a hardware announcement. Throw in some iPods as well and you’ve got a party.
Maybe but I hope not, I’m waiting to buy one! June does seem too early for Mountain Lion as Apple specifically said “late summer” but there was a rumour that Apple support staff were already being trained for ML, and the developer previews are being released quite a bit faster they were for Lion.
Still Apple needn’t wait for ML to release the hardware, last year they released hardware and just gave customers a free upgrade to Lion when it came out. It would be odd for Apple to wait that long to release Ivy Bridge laptops as they released Sandy Bridge models a week before SB was officially released, and the IB dual core and ULV processors are due out early June (quad core parts are already out.) It would also line up nicely with Apple’s “back to school” promotion that usually starts in early June. Various rumours have also pinpointed June.
It could all just be my wishful thinking though of course
