The Government Wants to Block Porn in Britain and Make You Declare You're a Perve to Get It Back

By Sam Gibbs on at

Having seen how easy it is to get the ISPs to block stuff, the government is eyeing up the online porn industry as the next potential blockade target. It wants to make you opt-in for the privilege of watching smut over your broadband connection, going on record that you're a porn-lover.

Apparently our dear Prime Minister is meeting with ISPs to discuss the prospect of internet filtering, after pressure from campaigners over the ease of viewing adult entertainment for children. Right now ISPs and parents in the UK have the option of putting parental controls in place, in effect an opt-out system, to block porn from their children's eyes.

While I can definitely see their point about the warping of tiny minds being incredibly easy as the internet basically is porn, but it's a worrying censorship path we're walking here in Britain. With pirating sites being blocked at the ISP level by court order, and now this, it looks like a free and open net has well and truly gone out the window. I'm all for protecting our kids, but surely an opt-out system would be better for the people who actually have kids, than making the rest of us hold our hands up and opt-in. I simply can't imagine how awkward that conversation with your ISP is going to be. [BBC via TechRadar]
