There is one big problem with themed naming schemes, and that’s running out of good words. While OS X has had a good run, evolving from Cheetah, through Jaguar, Tiger, Leopards and—most recently—Lions, the future looks bleak.
The problem is that Apple has used all the best felines. Even the shift to Mountain Lion for the most recent iteration of OS X is a demotion: the mountain lion is, strictly, part of the puma genus, and could easily be taken in a fight by the current, real lion.
Any further demotion would be an embarrassment. At any rate, Lynx has been used in the past for the hand-held Atari console, and Ocelot is already taken by Ubuntu. And dear God, names with the word “cat” in are a complete a non-starter.
That only really leaves, from the commonly-known felines, the cougar and extinct saber-toothed cat as possible naming options for future releases. Maybe it’s time to change animal family, Apple? [XKCD]
Updated: The alt-text, for those who are interested, reads: “‘Smilodon fatalis’ narrowly edged out ‘Tyrannosaurus rex’ to win this year’s Most Badass Latin Names competition, after edging out ‘Dracorex hogwartsia’ and ‘Stygimoloch spinifer’ (meaning ‘horned dragon from the river of death’) in the semifinals.”

They could shorten the next one from Sabre-toothed cat to just Sabre. That would sound awesome!!!
Plus the order of cats that would win in a fight is a little off, was watching a nature program the other day and a leopard was considering attacking some tiger cubs but as soon as mummy tiger came back the leopard bricked it and ran away!
So tiger obviously beats leopard quite easily!
leopards are in africa…. tigers in asia.
maybe he was knackered after that long walk (i take it you mean snow leopard or something?)
Leopards also exist in various locations in asia – India, China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Caucasus etc all have subspecies of the leopard family.

By the power of Greyskull its an easy choice for the next version.
My votes with “Battle Cat”. (they could even call it code name Cringer in Dev)
Personally (as a child of the 80s), I’d like to see them repeat the system, but to use the Thundercats equivalents.
So
Jaguar = Jaga
Lion = Lion-O
Tiger = Tygra
Panther = Panthro
Cheetah = Cheetara
Puma = Pumyra
etc.
Then, when you got really desperate…you could have “OS Snarf”…
I never got the deal with Snarf …was he dropped on his head when he was small or something?
How about something more homely like Tabby?
Why not go the whole hog and just use cat names. Tiddles, Muffin, Mr Frisky.
Mungojerrie, Rumpleteazer, Old Deuteronomy or Mr. Mistoffelees?
Rumpleteazer is a great name. Is this cat a personal acquaintance?
I think I may lose some man-points for saying this but.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cats_(musical)
There is nothing more manly than enjoying a good musicals….or at least that is what I keep telling myself.
There is nothing more manly than enjoying a good musical, I agree and have tickets to see Avenue Q soon, however he was talking about an Andrew Lloyd Webber one.
Gah which end of the Coolness scale is meant to be Cool and Uncool?!
You don’t get to decide after that musical suggestion!
There are plenty of options in the lolcat family. Ceiling Cat, Basement Cat, Monorail cat for example.
damn, beat me by a few minutes
You obviously don’t live in the comments like I do
also shouldn’t Nyan Cat be above Ceiling Cat?
yep, does seem a better order
Transition to a lolcat naming system instead?
basementcat -> longcat -> nyancat -> ceilingcat
You might not have been first but your presentation was impeccable
There’s still all the Tigons, Ligers and Pumapards to get through:
http://www.messybeast.com/genetics/hybrid-cats.htm
Ligers are fairly well known nowadays aren’t they
Seeing as Giz Authors are seemingly unable to do it, here is the Alt Text:
‘Smilodon fatalis’ narrowly edged out ‘Tyrannosaurus rex’ to win this year’s Most Badass Latin Names competition, after edging out ‘Dracorex hogwartsia’ and ‘Stygimoloch spinifer’ (meaning ‘horned dragon from the river of death’) in the semifinals
Sorry, I know from having written about XKCD strips before that sometimes it’s easy to forget the alt text exists! I’ll add it in now.
Thanks Kat!
Clouded Leopard, not only looks cool and sounds cool but is also in the cloud. But I’m waiting on the OSX Scottish Wildcat, I’d like to see a stable version of that!
Then you got hybrids: Ligers, Tigons, Leopons, Lepjags, Jaglion, Pumapards, etc…
Then cross hybrids: Ti-Liger, Ti-Tigon, Li-Tigon, Li-Liger, etc…
So basically with the sort of money Apple have they can keep breeding and cross breeding big cats till the end of time, or make genetically modified versions like Glow-Cheetahs, Spider-Pumas, Octo-Tigers, and what is cooler than a genetically modified big cat? F*ck all – who doesn’t what a Lion-Banana?
Solve World Hunger… Cross-breed Big Cats.. Solve World Hunger… Cross-breed Big Cats? Screw it I wanna see me some Octo-Tigers!
A hard call to make, but I am sure in the process of making a Octo-Tiger that many advancements for solving world hunger will be made – like a eight legged turkey, great for world hunger and a happy Christmas. Or like genetically making Cow-Elephants, don’t we have them already? A greater yield of milk and meat, or maybe we milk and eat elephants already, do we? This is already raising many questions for myself, can I patent an elephant with udders? Can you patent a web spinning puma in theory or do you have to make one first? Would people buy domesticated mini-lions, or as I like to call them pussy-cats? Can you tame a grizzly-shrew?
Just thinking of the greater good.
Leapaconda?
Surely soon we’ll be seeing OSXI and therefore a new breed of names.
I’m up for OSXI Wolf
OS XI – Arctic Fox
I think they should go for a different beastie for the next lineage. Start with Pit Pony, and go all the way up to …. Unicorns! Yes, OS XI Pit Pony – cute, or what?
I agree on a different breed of beast for a new iteration.
I suggest goats. Not only is the representation fitting, as you can count on the next OSX iteration “eating more memory and hard drive space than never before” but some goat names sound way cool! Golden Guernsey anyone?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_goat_breeds
And we have GM goats already – spider-goats!!!!!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-16554357
I have to admit, they appear to be very friendly, neighbourhood spider-goats!
