A patent that was filed back in July last year by Sony, has recently surfaced that details how to shoehorn an ad break right in the middle of your gaming session.
Apparently the game will slow down, then you'll get a little notification pop up before you're forced to sit through an advert. After the ad is done you'll get another warning before being allowed to go back to your game. There's also a mention of the ability to rewind the game after the advert, which will probably be necessary if the damn thing interrupts you mid-firefight, or when you're trying to jump over some tricky obstacles for the nth time.
Honestly, this sounds like an absolutely terrible idea to me. It would annoy me so much that I reckon it might even get me to quit the game. It's not the first time we've seen publishers try and shoehorn adverts into games though. The best attempt I ever saw was EA putting real adverts onto virtual billboards within Burnout. At least then they weren't so in your face, and you could smash right through them if they got annoying. [USPTO via NeoGAF via Eurogamer]
