Google just updated the Gmail iOS app, adding improvements that might encourage people to, you know, actually use it. The most important upgrade is support for Notification Center, which means you can now configure the app to show you alerts with message previews.
For everyone who’s annoyed by needing to login into Gmail every single time you open it because your session has expired, the updated Gmail now has persistent login. Unfortunately, Gmail for iOS is still basically just a webapp, which means that offline access is still barely there. Little by little, though, it seems Gmail is heading in the right direction. Why would people use this over the built in Mail app? Its brilliant IMO. And works nicely with gmail.
If you ever star/label conversations in Gmail, you would know that this is not true.
Going to attempt to reply to this again but Gizmodo seems to be going Gizmodoff.
Yea I avoided labels until they had proper support for folders. Much prefer folders for organisation and better supported in lots of applications
I see why people might want it though if they use them.
Gmail labels are the one thing miss after going back to hotmail as my primary email. It’s just so much better than folders. Hopefully other email providers start to ditch folders entirely and adopt the label system of organisation.
Hahaha – Hotmail!
Proper folder support is the only thing keeping me there.
I’ve always preferred the gmail app to the iOS mail app because I use gmail for almost all my mail and it makes doing the gmail specific tasks much easier. Lables and starred items in particular are right there. I personally haven’t had to log in every single time I open the app but when I do it’s a bit of a hassle on the iOS keyboard and honestly I’m never going to check my mail if I don’t have internet so I’m not plagued by that problem either.
I am rather tempted by sparrow but it probably can’t star emails on the fly either.
