Google Buys Quickoffice to Launch Nuclear Attack on Microsoft

By Gary Cutlack on at

Google has made an interesting little move into Microsoft territory, announcing the acquisition of cross-platform mobile MS Office suite Quickoffice.

Quickoffice already has a fair few users in the mobile world, thanks to deals that sees free trial versions of the productivity tools pre-loaded on many of today's smartphones, which users are then asked to pay to upgrade for full write access to Microsoft's widely used desktop formats.

Google says it's a fan of the way Quickoffice provides "seamless interoperability" between file formats, but we wouldn't be surprised if this was a pre-emptive move to see off any possible launch of an official version of MS Office into Google's beloved mobile territory. [Google via PC World]
