At some point or another Google has probably given you some helpful security prompt at the top of your Gmail or in its Chrome browser, but we've never seen one quite like this: the new notification will be shown when it looks like the attempted intruder isn't just a hacker but a whole goddamn country.
The notification comes after a year in which multiple prominent figures were hacked by suspected state-sponsored hackers. Google warns that seeing the warning doesn't necessarily mean your account has been hacked — it could just mean that you've been targeted by a malware or a phishing attack.
Given the huge rise in politically-charged cyberattacks that are perpetrated by every major country on the planet — United States included — it's a good thing Google wants to let us know what's going on. [Google via New York Times via The Verge]
