Larry Ellison, the sixth richest man in the world, has just bought 98 per cent of Lanai, the sixth largest island in Hawaii. All the other kids at the billionaires club must have been bullying Ellison over his private island credentials, because his newly purchased chunk of America is 1000 times bigger than Branson's puny piece of off-shore real estate, that'll show 'em.
The volcanic island comes with two Four Seasons resorts; two golf courses; interest in a solar farm; utility companies; 47 miles of coastline, and 3,200 henchmen, sorry, residents.
Bill Gates, the second richest man in the world got married on the island, maybe Ellison is such a huge fan that he just had to own the spot where his hero tied the knot. Rumour has it he also plans to buy the hospital where Bill was born and the car park where he lost his virginity. [Bloomberg]
