Sony has said it’s waiting until next generation hardware can show a “significant leap” ahead of what’s on offer today, before revealing any new hardware or software that may make up its PlayStation4 console.
The comments come via Sony Europe’s CEO Andrew House, who gave trade publication MCV a big interview covering the recent new gaming stuff Sony demonstrated at E3 and talked in rather vague terms about the future.
When specifically asked for his comments on Sony’s PlayStation4, House said: “The right time to talk about new advances in hardware is when you can demonstrate a significant leap on the current experience, and something that is going to be attractive. That remains our philosophy. Beyond that we have nothing to say at this point.”
Given that the recent Activision court document fun told us to expect Xbox 720 in 2013 and PS4 around a year later, that all seems to make sense. PS4′s not built yet so there’s precious little to show. [MCV via CVG]

Seems more of a dig about consols coming out sooner then anything else – unless I’m reading too much into it.
PS3 came out in 2006 – (plus the fact it was likly to be based on tech at least a year before that) So effectivly he’s saying there hasn’t been a jump in tech in the last 6/7 years?
He is saying he dosen’t want to make a PS3.5.
Which Im down with. Then next gen consoles should be ground breaking, like every other playstation release (for its time).
Agreed. Maybe there are looking at other options such as using the Sony Network to stream games to the consoles instead of purchasing games on optical disks. This would be the first of its kind and put them ahead of the rest. I do feel comsole gaming needs a new update direction and not just another updated stand alone rig.
I like the new direction Microsoft are going with xbox and the Smart Glass App.
And if PS don’t come out with something innovative with the PS4 then I might just have to jump ship.
The next line of consoles needs to have unbelievable graphics. We are constantly seeing updated graphics, and games with immense cut scenes. But the nextgen consoles need to play like current cut scenes.
Please for the love of god no.. I have a 20GB limit on my BB per month… so no… just no.
hahahah, i feel your pain…this wont take off just yet as other technologies around it just arnt ready. If they also go for better graphics they may exceed 1080p so not everyone will can afford the next-gen TV’s.
Sony are looking to stop pirating as well so this maybe the only way they can control it…
I don’t disagree with that part – but what I’m saying is that he thinks there isn’t enough new tech out there ATM – Blu-Ray advancement, Motion controlled devices, integrated external devices, increased CPU/Graphics power and efficient tec. dashboard/multimedia tec>
There’s enough of a change from a 10 year old consol & don’t forget as long as they are smart they can add devices to extend its lifespan like the Kinect coming out 4 years after the 360….
I dont feel the article is detailing this at all, there have been loads of advancements like you say, its a generic response to a journalist to hide what they are really doing. Blu-Ray will probably be the last optical media now anyways but motion sensors and full user interactivity will be where gaming is heading. The comment was designed to make people speculate, ask questions create some interest
The PS3 was initially sold at a loss to Sony in order to get their Bluray disks in to the homes of the masses.
The tech they put out then was ahead of its time and heavily subsidized.
Unfortunately the company isn’t as stable as then and arn’t trying there hardest to win the platform war (which they won).
So this time around I think they will play it safe and put out a console that makes money (they did make lots of money of ps3, but more through gamesales and blueray licencing).
There have been advances in tech in the past 8 years, but nothing revolutionary.
What i would like to see someone attempt in the console market would be mods/add ons. Like being able to simply pullout the guts and put in a better one. Thus creating a machine that can evolve every couple of years
“What i would like to see someone attempt in the console market would be mods/add ons. Like being able to simply pullout the guts and put in a better one. Thus creating a machine that can evolve every couple of years”
Knowing Sony/microsoft they would hate that idea…this would give people the ablilty to add what they liked and probably hack the crap out of it in doing so.
You right though, an open source console type would be good to see
“able to simply pullout the guts and put in a better one” Doesn’t that defeat the whole purpose of a console over a gaming PC? Being able to optimise the crap out of the games for the specific hardware?
did you just say the ps3 won the console war against the xbox 360? Numbers to back this up please.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Console_wars
Xbox 360 – 65.8 million as of 12 January 2012
PlayStation 3 – 63.9 million as of 31 March 2012
Now lets turn that into profit / loss made for each company, taking into account the loss the ps3 was sold at, compared to the money things like xbox live sells.
Then add in the revenue from games that both have made (Xbox accounts for over 45% of all revenue from games and accessories in USA for over last 14 months) and i bet you will have a picture that paints the Xbox made MS a lot more money than the PS3 made sony.
Lets not forget the damage/cost the PSN hack made, lots of pissed off PS3 owners and lost revenue too.
Remember HD-DVD..?
Thought not.
Consols sell at a lost at the start – always the case in resent sets as its better to get the install base for the long run. One of the main points to bring out from that is Sony continued to sell at a loss for many a year afterwards and when bringing out revised models.
HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray was as much about the movie distributors (and Porn playing a big big factor) (if not more) then the consols – IMO that argument is invalid as the orginal point is there has been more then enough tech advancements in the last 6 years to warrent bringing out a product.
“Which they won”
WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH.
That’s English for stop a horse…
Why don’t YOU make that leap instead of resting on your fat filled whiny arse, SONY, you obese slug of a company! Are you waiting for the next iPod like takeover, to kill the only industry you’re barely thriving in? Morons!
That is the Sony way…..
Sony don’t make that sort of tech… They put together tech in a good way. You do realise that you should really know this.
They put together tech in a good way ? You’re saying it like it’s actually working out for them ! The company is close to collapse and it’s stock is a ‘sell’.
Theoretically of course, doesn’t help that several tech companies are doing the same thing better!
There obviously isn’t any “significant” technological advancement in their Sony office. AKA, the competition isn’t doing shit just yet, we don’t have to work.
Competition isn’t doing shit just yet.. well, atleast not that they know of.
