Starbucks has been facing a right old Twitter storm after confusing its Irish followers for Brits -- a cardinal sin in the eyes of the Republic -- asking them whether they were "proud to be British".
The offending tweet went out on the American coffee chain's Ireland-only Twitter stream @Starbucks.IE, as part of the Jubilee celebrations. "Happy hour is on! Show us what makes you proud to be British for a chance to win," said Starbucks, probably promptly followed by a "god, no!" with the sudden realisation at what some unfortunate had just done.
A grovelling apology did eventually arrive on the Twitter feed, with a further official statement begging for forgiveness released some time later. I guess asking the Irish whether they're proud to be British is about the same level of aggravation as asking us Brits whether we're proud to be French. Ouch. [Twitter via The Guardian]
