If you’ve ever sat at your desk, contentedly listening to streaming music on your computer and thought, “Man, I wish this existed 25 years ago,” stop. You don’t. You really, really don’t. Watch this video and recant.
BONUS: Jo Luijten of Squirrel-monkey.com, who created the video above also sent us the hilarious image below. As he describes it, it’s “a screenshot of Gizmodo in a parallel universe, where Gizmodo was founded in the ’80s.” Love it to pieces.

Thanks, Jo!

I’d love to see pictures of the Giz staff in the 80′s assuming they were actually alive back then
You just want them to post photos like the one you did on G+
I imagine that that is what a lot of the Giz staff looked like in the 80′s
please do a day with 80s gizmodo.. pleaseeeeeee
There’s no way Jesus wrote that article.
There was not one “amazing!!” in the whole thing.
I was thinking more on the techy side:
Can you imagine how horrible a streaming music service would have sounded 25 years ago? What bitrate MP3 could be streamed over a low-speed dial-up link of the time?
My ears are melting just imaging it
Im sure there is someone that will correct me, but im pretty sure there was no computer that would be powerful enough to decode/play an mp3 file. I couldnt even imagine streaming a WAV file that would take forever to buffer at 14kbps.
Midi would have been the way to go and would have sounded awful as the video suggests. using todays computers and a 56kbps modem I think it would be possible to stream an mp3 file at 64k or 128k at a push.
Oh wow, completely forgot about the CPU requirements there.
I remember my first PC (1998) struggling to encode MP3s at anything near realtime (300mhz CPU), 25 years old would be slower still o.O
It’s that ruddy bike again on the main page! Is stunting my dreams now!
