Would You Trust Your Life to a Spacesuit From Kickstarter?

By Sam Gibbs on at

With the modern era of commercial space travel just about to start, it's about time we got around to updating those bulky spacesuits you see NASA and ESO astronauts wearing with something a bit more streamline. But is Kickstarter really the best way to get it done?

Final Frontier Design -- a costume designer from New York paired up with a Russian spacesuit engineer -- is aiming to build the next generation in space safety gear that you can wear while you ride your £100m ticket to the Moon.

The idea is that their third generation suit will be cheap, well, compared to NASA's million pound suits at least. Anyone who pledges £6,400 or more will get their very own spacesuit too. Whether you'd trust something that cost just £6,400 though, I'm not sure. There's got to be a reason NASA spends millions on its spacesuits. If you're going to be blasting yourself up into the dark void of space, your emergency suit probably isn't something you'll want to skimp on. [Kickstarter via Wired]
