The PS3 controller is a starved, emaciated excuse of a video game controller. It’s terribly skinny with no curves and feels like you’re holding the result of a skinny TV remote’s incestual relationship. The Xbox 360 controller? Now there’s something worth holding. And with this Cronus adapter you can use the Xbox controller with your PS3.
Or you can use the PS3 controller with your Xbox 360, but why oh why would you want to do that? Oh yeah, the d-pad on the Xbox 360 controller is awful. EVERYTHING ABOUT EVERYTHING IS AWFUL. Okay, it’s not, but maybe you’ve grown really comfortable with the crappy PS3 controller — people often have irrational personal tastes for these type of things. Cronus works every which way. Play with whichever controller you’re comfortable with by plugging in the Cronus dongle to the console’s USB port and sync your preferred wireless controller to the adapter. It’s supposed to be pretty simple.
Even if we disagree on which controller between the Xbox 360 and PS3 is better, we can all laugh about how Cronus also supports the Wii too. [Cronus via Engadget]

The Ultimate Combo Console -- PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U in One Box
Personally, I find the Xbox controller to be very uncomfortable, especially the wireless models. The finger grips are just a bit too narrow for comfort and the battery pack obstructs my fingers so they feel cramped.
I’m also not a fan of the asymmetric analog sticks, my left thumb cramps up after a few minutes.
On the other hand, the PS3 pads rear triggers were designed with more style than sense, much too easy to slip off or accidentally press when placing the controller down.
I bought some of those realtrigger things which clip on and, I have to say, it’s now perfect.
On a slightly related note, I don’t know why anyone would want to use the Wii controller with anything.
It’s all about what you’re used to.
I hate the triggers on the PS3 and I think it feels cheap and plasticky, too light but it’s just preference.
Great idea though
I’m in the same boat, and I’m quite sure it’s because of owning a 360, not a PS3. I’ve never met an owner of either console that prefers the other’s controller – unless you factor the Wii in, whereby they’re jealous of every other controller on the planet.
For me, everything about the Dualshock3 pad just feels cheap and imitated. As you said, the triggers are horrid, but I think all of the buttons lack any real kinetic feedback. On my 360 pad, the bumpers click, the buttons snap back and the Guide button is the enormous, flashing metallic heart of the whole thing. To draw a more common analogy, using a PS3 pad is like using a laptop’s soft-touch keyboard versus a great, big mechanical monster. Yes, the laptop keys look nicer, but nothing beat the feel of a full, proper keyboard.
I own a 360 and prefer the ps controller, but that’s coz I owned a ps1 and 2 and got a 360 sinc the ps3 took ages to come, that said i dont mind the 360 controller that much.
It says something when the comment left by irononreverse has less bias and more journalistic flow than the entire article.
But if you use a 360 controller on a PS3, you won’t be able to use Sixaxis, and I’m sure everyone would miss Sixaxis, as it’s used on everything.
MY WHOLE LIFE IS A LIE……..
P.S Does this work with N64 pads?… I’ve been needing a reason to break those bad boys out…
I don’t comment that much on here, but this article is so terrible it’s forced me into commenting.
This is the first time i’ve ever considered an article anywhere to be one that is only trolling for comments.
Rather than laud the Cronus’s ability for multi platform owners to use their favoured pads accross their consoles; it’s just baiting for a load of “my pad is better” ocmments.
#satiricalarticlefail
Hey, it’s personal opinion. As the writer states, “Even if we disagree on which controller between the Xbox 360 and PS3 is better…”
Personally I think that this article goes so completely over the top that it is obviously a send up. I agree with you that it could do with more info on the Cronus, but if it is as simple as the plug and play description there isn’t really much else they could say.
I agree. This is the one few articles that’s made me comment.
Gizmodo always has nice straight to the point summaries that don’t really warrant a comment as most comments on blogs are fanboys ranting.
The fact it allows you to use any pad on any console(i’m assuming sega meagdrive to!) is enough to get excited about.
The less said about the merits of the article the better but our own little comments section got me thinking back to a piece I read in N64 magazine many, many years ago (An old Future Publishing favourite of mine)…
It was about Shigeru Miyamoto’s design philosophies when designing controllers for Nintendo (he’s always been heavily involved in their genesis, particularly with N64 and Gamecube). I’m fairly certain there was an accompanying feature on Nintendo patents associated with controllers; one of which was a modular design with a central unit that contained mist of the internal gubbins, but with slots on either side/beneath the main housing that allowed you to decide exactly where to put your analogue sticks/buttons/triggers, with different options available for sale based on your preferences for weight and bulk.
They obviously decided against pursuing it…but there’s enough argument about what represents the perfect configuration that many people would certainly be interested in them resurrecting it. Personally, I think the DualShock works very well for football games and most Fighting Games, whilst the Xbox 360 Controller wins in First Person Games and others. The modular approach would give us the best of all worlds dependant on the game…
Mad Catz have already brought out a controller that lets you switch the stick/dpad location: http://uk.gamespot.com/features/mad-catz-mlg-pro-circuit-controller-hands-on-6350175/
Personally I’m happy just to use my DS3 when playing on the PS3. If I play on an Xbox it doesn’t take me long to get used to the different thumb position required.
It’s a shame all of my back-issues went in the bin…the Nintendo solution was much more elegant than this and I’m struggling to find the words to describe it adequately.
I’m with you…It never takes long to acclimatise.
If Casey’s bias towards the superior controller design actually makes you create and account or “post when I don’t normally” then you need to evaluate your life.
I own both consoles and I can say hands down I HATE the ps3 controller. It feels cheap, small and is not well moulded for a persons hands.
It’s a controller, get over it. Sheesh.
You see, for me, the PS3 controller is the most comfortable out of pretty much every controller I used.
It may be my small, girlish hands or my short, stubby thumbs but everything is ergonomically sound for me. Apart from those triggers
am i the only one here that would quite like the ability to use a keyboard and mouse with my console or a trackball in the controller?
im genuinely surprised there isn’t much in the way of KBM adapters on the market (or trackball controllers)
i know people keep telling me ill get used to sticks but i havnt and personally i dont think sticks can beat the instant aim of a mouse
Was this a journalistic troll to get the fanboys at each others’ throats?
Everybody has their favourite, and as many people stated there is no point in using one with the other as six-axis is only in the PS3.
I call shenanigans.
The article seemed pretty useful to me, and I’d love to get the 360 pad working on me ps3 as the ps3 pad just feels cheap and uncomfortable to me. Plus 6-axis is pointless ad next to nothing uses it.
Of the 20 odd games I’ve got I think one used it? in a really minor way that was pretty much only gimicky anyway.
30 squid is a bargain too for plug and play compatibility! Thanks for the heads up
Load of crap. Nothing has ever gotten close to the SNES pad.
