When you’re ironing out a whole new mapping platform, like Apple is, some small details are sure to slip through the cracks. Names of streets, wrong turns, confusing oceans and deserts thousands of miles apart, the spellings of some small to… Hold it.
Yep. Apple’s new Maps app confuses Greenland for the Indian Ocean, the Indian Ocean for the Arctic Ocean, the middle of Africa for the North Pacific, and the southern ocean for the North Atlantic. Which, you know, not minor details. They’ll be ironed out shortly, no doubt, but those are delightfully idiotic mistakes to have gone live, especially considering some of the small details Apple has in there. Let us know if you spot any others!
Thanks James!

This is so wrong I am finding it hard to believe. Was it taken from public schools text books in the States??
i was intending to check out your response to the idiot who tried to educate you on fragmentation, i wrote a particularly scathing on but thought it was better left to you! Did you give the BallBag a mouthful or just ignore him? what story was it on again??

Took me a few minutes to find it, I did reply, but I would very much like to read your reply if you remember it.
This is the article: http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2012/06/the-iphone-4-wont-get-facetime-over-3g-either/
Well my response was nothing like yours was!
Mine was sarcastic and sharp, I forget the exact words now but I asked him if he understood the concept of ironic humour and explained the definition of patronising in a highly hypocritical manner!
I guess I just thought you deserved a bit more respect is all!
My Bristles were Brustled
Thanks, I appreciate it.
This is correct, what we were taught in school was wrong.
Yeah, the previous publishers of maps had to change the names because Apple patented this map first.
I am so sick of the relentless bitching about apple in articles from this website.
As soon as a new one pops up, you know straight away that you are moaning about them.
It’s getting old……and pathetic
I can think of about a hundred or so articles from this very website that were doing anything other than bitching about Apple… most of them posted yesterday. I think the positive articles… in fact I’m pretty Damn sure the positive articles blew the negative out of the water unfortunately.
Yeah the balance between praising and bitching is way out. This is one of the many posts about to hit our screens just to give people who jump at the chance to bitch about Apple a wall on which they can.
I’ll give you that. The balance is way out. Gizmodo praising Apple all the way like their the second coming. Way way out. I like a bit of balance myself.
I actually stopped reading Gizmodo for a bit because of the non stop praising of Apple products, its funny that a few articles count as relentless amounts of bitching.
Its more to the point that Apple set themselves a high standard, everyone believes they are the best so when they mess up its only normal for people to pick at it. I’m sure they fix the problems people have noticed, but as the article suggests Apple always meticulous but missed the huge mistakes.
It’s funny, but I almost stopped reading Gizmodo due to the constant fawning over Apple. Still nothing’s as bad as reading Endgadget. I have never seen such a poisonousness place as Endgadget.
Try reading techcrunch, specially articles written by M. G. Siegler, you will lose faith in humanity.
Bloody hell. It’s a bit… green!
This isn’t really bitching its more humour, something to laugh at not go mental screaming “APPLE ARE TERRIBLE”
At no point does it say anything really negative at all.
There are articles posted on here that are both positive and negative about Apple but to say its relentless bitching is ignorant and incorrect, the bitching of Apple comes mostly from the commenters when Articles come up that praise Apple
I would like to thank you for your comment, it really made me think. If a few posts about faults in software that isn’t even available to the general public compared with a huge number of articles praising every new feature of iOS 6 to the skies can be classed as “relentless batching about Apple” then perhaps my own views about the huge pro-Apple bias often shown here are way off the mark and they are secretly Apple haters who never miss a chance to put the boot in. Either that or you are just a sad widdle fanboy who can’t accept any criticism of your chosen religion.
Is it really a chosen religion? I thought Apple just brainwashed everyone
Everyone has to make the choice to join and they are free to leave at anytime.
Hotel California
The lines between marketing, cults, brainwashing and religion are remarkably fuzzy.
The idea being that you teach something to someone, tell them that this way is the best and only way, in the hope that they won’t even consider other options or ideas.
It tends to work, people are gullible and naive.
Anyway, lol @ Apples maps! Great attention to detail when it comes to the shiny, not so much when it comes to things that actually have tangible usefulness.
gotta be the most “liked” comment on Giz. ahaha.
Spatchmo’s is better (see below)
It’s not a bug, it’s a feature! Gosh, how can you still not know?
/s
my andriod…. .. no I won’t lol
Maybe Apple have plans for a new iUtopia
Anyone missed the fact that it’s still actually in Beta?
Convenient get out clause, lets release it unfinished and just tag beta at the end so people will know it’s got faults and make excuses. They’ve never done that before!
That does it! I’m now cancelling my monthly donations to charity. “Look at these poor people suffering from drought. Send us £10 a month and we’ll make sure this village gets a new pump” they said. They failed to mention that the North Pacific Ocean was in the middle of Africa! Bunch of thieving gits! I bet they use all of those donations to buy yachts. Thanks Apple for pointing out this scam to me, I’ll make sure my next phone is an iPhone.
“For just £35 a month, you too can help Apple engineers learn their geography.”
It’s really disturbing but still it’s beta. Pointing out the problems is fine as it helps them get it right but I wonder will it be working perfectly fine by this fall when it goes live to public ? these are no minor mistakes at all. I hope Google maps make it to the iPhone before the iOS 6 public release or else we got Waze, actually that makes me think, we got plenty of good stuff and they know it so just like SIRI it’s gonna be in accurate most of the times till iOS 7 comes with some revolutionary Accurate mapping features. etc etc lol.
it may be beta…. everyone can keep using that as a defence, but bloody hell its a map of the world… they have put the pacific ocean in Africa… beta or not, it’s idiotic.
What a mistake-a to make-a!!
someones in for a bollocking, that’s for sure!!
Its funny because apple eschewed a free service for a worse one!
come now, its a bit early in the day for words like eschewed!
Dear Gizmodo.
I’m really fed up with this site for Always praising Apple and extolling on how awesome it is whilst concurrently slagging it off at every given opportunity, it’s clearly biased for and against apple which means the site gets severely biased against and for Android, the Gizmodo staff are all such Crapple Fandroid Sheeple and i’ve stopped reading this site whilst also carried on on many occasions. Don’t even get me started on Windows
phone.
I Hate to Love to Hate to Love all of the explicitly good whilst being dismissively bad reviews and I demand to know why you aren’t writing more stories about new laptops, which have had a bit too much coverage recently in my humble opinion.
The coverage of the bi-monthly Crawley Town Computer fair has been disappointing to say the very least and i would expect a Tech Blog like this to have more news solely about Tech, but do you think you could maybe rain it in a bit on the technology side of things and maybe introduce a photo competition and other items to make this site exactly like the American site which is just such utter shoddy amezeballs that i love and cant stand to go to anymore.
Please can you take heed to my compraiselaints and write more and less articles about how goodbad Appledroid isn’tis, moreless articles about pure tech only whilst also concentrating on Juggling, the Ukulele, Sci-fi and how warm salads and swimming can aid in weight loss and i must say i really expect to have final editorial veto on all stories from now on.
PS, change the name of the site to Spatchmodo as well as it really is all just about me and what i like.
Juggling article coming right up!
(PS: You do make me laugh, Spatch!)
I was hoping it would, i’ve just seen one too many comments complaining about the apple coverage, you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t and it’s my little fight back at the haters!
Not seen an juggling articles yet, was this another evil deception of your readership, like that story about your neighbour’s gnome?
My favourite comment of ALL TIME.
Seconded. I think Kat should add this to the commenting guidelines and re-use it as the standard reply in the case of any more “Scott” letters.
such epicness is to be applauded, especially this early in the day
Cheers Darrell, much appreciated!
I’m getting a bit fed up with all the complaints about the apple coverage, a guy further up was saying he’s fed up with Giz being so negative towards apple and it just set me off! they’re damned if they do, damned if they don’t! it’s all just so ridiculous!!
Yeah, to be honest I think the Apple coverage has been excessive but there are plenty of people who are interested in it and if the metrics didn’t confirm this then Kat & Sam would not just shovel on tons of unwanted posts. Perhaps we should get T-shirts made saying “Giz UK is not Your Bitch”.
Exactly, it all boils down to metrics at the end of the day, as they’ve emphasised before. They’re not gonna waste their time writing articles people don’t wanna read when they can write others that will get copious amounts of hits.
Like I’ve said elsewhere, I don’t think the amount of articles was quite justified, but certainly the amount of content is. It’s what people want to read, why would Giz deny that? And essentially, I’m not a journalist. Sure, they’re ultimately answerable to their consumers, like all businesses, but that doesn’t mean we’re all experts on journalism.
Oh and Spatchmo, brilliant commenting – but I don’t expect any less!
I have to agree with the others, best comment I have ever read.
Truly brilliant comment
