We’ve heard this clamouring before, but after years of experimenting and hypothesising, The Telegraph says that CERN—keepers of the Large Hadron Collider—will hold a press conference later today to confirm the existence of the Higgs boson particle, commonly referred to as the God Particle. It could be the biggest announcement/discovery in the history of physics.
The rumour suggests that scientists will announce a 4-sigma level discovery, meaning they’re 99.99 per cent certain the Higgs boson exists.
The Higgs boson particle is thought to be an invisible entity surrounding all things that their interactions with particles is what gives them mass, thus holding atoms, matter, and ultimately the universe, together. Much of theoretical physics—especially as it pertains to our conception of the universe—is built around speculation that this particle exists. But we have yet to ever encounter it with any certainty. Some say that if the Higgs boson is discovered, we’ll need to reevaluate and revise many theorems in the field of physics to reflect this significant discovery. But it’s possible we could be getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s first wait and see what CERN announces today. [UK Telegraph]

Is that the Telegraph ! And the article says press conference is ‘next week’?
“biggest announcement/discovery in the history of physics”
Hyperbole much? Maybe in the recent history of physics..
It’s very difficult to decide what the “biggest announcement/discovery in the history of physics” actually is, since everything follows on from the last big thing. It can, for instance be argued that Newton’s work was a bigger jump from it’s predecessors than Einstein’s was from his.
Exactly. And you could argue that the greatness of the discovery relates to the technology, knowledge and subsequent discoveries that it enables. So we won’t know the greatness of this discovery for many years yet..
Indeed, for instance penicillin is one of the greatest scientific discoveries ever due to the number of lives it has saved and the discovery of germs and bacteria even more so.
I’d say it’s definitely up there. THE greatest unexplained event in the universe is how it was created. Before there was mass, there must have been no mass, so understanding how this could have been created explains the very existence of everything following it. So in a way, this event created every physical law that we currently understand, making it surely more significant?
The Large Hadron Collider is a complete waste of time and money. Having watched my daughter’s debut on the stage last week, I can confirm that all questions and theories relating to particle physics and interaction can be easinly explained by watching a class of 4-year olds attempting complicated ballet manouevres.
Trolling.
No, hes just stupid
Hmmm, the UK Telegraph source link is in fact the Daily Mail, which says that the announcement will be on Wednesday.
It’s the Tevatron who are announcing results today (right now in fact). The LHC results are on Wednesday.
