Facebook will now include special icons for same-sex couples who indicate that they’re married on Facebook. Just a few weeks ago, developers realised that Apple introduced same-sex couple emojis in iOS 6. The times they are a-changing.
Now, users who specify that they are in a same-sex marriage will see icons featuring two men or two women pop up on their Facebook Timelines on the date that the marriage became official. Last year Facebook added the “In a Civil Union” and “In a Domestic Partnership” to its relationships statuses. [GLAAD via AllFacebook via Twitter]

Oh for fu-…I’m all for equal rights and yes Facebook should have specific statuses for gays and lesbians, but do they really need their own specific little icons everywhere?
You don’t see places making white and black ones for those of us who aren’t Smurfs(facebook) or Simpsons(emotes). Or bigger ones for us fatties, are same sex couples really going to get upset over an icon?
Where’s my little icon of two men, with one man in a dress? Where’s MY equality!?
And what about lesbian couples where one partner is more masculine than the other, shouldn’t they have an icon with one woman in a suit?
Seriously though, about f-ing time facebook.
I’m going to have to bite my tongue here, but to be kind to you I find you to be completely misguided and narrow-minded in this matter.
Emoticons and Facebook’s little blue people are clearly race-neutral depictions of human beings (or the emotions that the human face can evoke). They certainly don’t specifically exclude or offend any group of people through their colour.
Previously; if a gay couple were to utilise the feature that resulted in the publishing of this icon; then they were clearly and blatantly excluded to some degree, as they may very well have felt that the symbol didn’t adequately reflect the nature of their relationship. To anybody’s eyes the previous situation had the potential to cause embarrassment/upset and was discriminatory.
I welcome the move. Social media is about inclusion as well as clear and unfettered communication with friends and family. It was a simple change that doesn’t hurt anybody else; but which has the potential to bring joy and feelings of acceptance to an entire group of people who were previously poorly catered-for.
You sir, know how to say my thoughts but better
So you think the gay couple should fight over who should be represented by the lady icon and who should be the man?
You say you’re all for equal rights. why then are you arguing against a litle thing that makes them more equal?

No I think they shouldn’t get worked up over an icon, especially a marriage one. Surely they should be too busy being married to their partner to care what an icon on Facebook looks like?
