Thunderbolt was one of the killer features last year. 10 gigabits! But since then, there have been a few Thunderbolt products, and a few comically absentee ones, but it feels like most of us have never even used the port—Mini Displayport double duty notwithstanding. Anyone getting actual use out of the thing, or is it as abandoned as it feels?

I have an iMac 27′ with an SSD hard drive so I run all my applications from the SSD and then (to save space) have my entire library of iTunes, iPhoto, Final Cut, Logic etc on a 4TB Thunderbolt external HDD. It runs as if the drive was internal and takes seconds to transfer large files. I also daisy chain a 3rd monitor off the external drive as the other thunderbolt on the iMac is running my flat screen for watching films etc via HDMI. Its incredibly fast and reliable. Awesome technology.
Bloody hell, that’s a pretty tasty set-up you got there!
Not really, no.
There is hardly any devices which i have that use thunderbolt, and its only avilable to macs at this moment (i believe) so the user group is rather restricted
Yesterday on my Macbook Air with the Thunderbolt -> Ethernet adaptor. My Wi-Fi was dead so I had to plug my Mac in directly. Worked well, but (the adaptor) got quite warm, even though it was only about 30 minutes use.
Still, I’ve used a Mini Displayport adaptor with it many times, but that isn’t really Thunderbolt, so it doesn’t count.
No, not yet. Although when I go to university I will have to use the Thunderbolt ethernet adaptor for my Macbook Air in my halls of residence, as apparently it’s against the network rules to set up any form of wireless network…still going to set one up using an airport express though, and just see what happens
Nothing will happen. It’s halls.
Yeah, I connect my 15″ MacBook Pro to the TV so I can watch all those High Def TV Shows and Movies
I would use it for hard drives too if the damn things wernt so expensive.
Yup! Used it as a mini display port for my HD tele. Speed is almost irrelevant here, I suppose.
Yup, I use the one on my office iMac regularly for capturing video game footage from iOS devices via the Black Magic Intensity Extreme.
To me it seems that people are mostly using it for a wired Ethernet adaptor and a display port, things that people need and are missing. Great piece of technology though.
Until intel offer both a cheap license and open this up to as many platforms as possible (Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, Windows, WinPho and Blackberry) it is destined to suffer the same fate as the brilliant firewire connection of death by exclusivity.
I have a iMac 27″ and a PS3 and wanted to combine the two. As HDMI is encoded different to MDP I had to buy some snazzy conversion box so I can now use my iMac as HDMI monitor.
Oh yes. Use it on Retina Macbook with the Matrox MX02 to edit broadcast telly. A hell of a lot cheaper than the Avid Mojo. Actually wish I had another port.
No i haven`t ,and i did not use the Fire Wire Port.
They seem to think i am a computer wizard. It`s OK for those people who have the gift.
Remember it`s easy when you know all the answer`s.
I do know how you use USB`s.
I am 63 yrs old and i am leaning myself.
