There’s no way Gigabyte’s Xenon Dual Mode Touchpad Mouse, that is a trackpad and mouse in one combination, can be any good, right? The mouse looks like a complete horror show, like using an angular Magic Mouse, and the trackpad looks neutered and drooping. I don’t believe.
Gigabyte says that the Xenon is world’s first dual mode touchpad/mouse action, which seems sort of cool but probably foreboding on why this Frankenmouse didn’t exist before. Still, there are possible use cases: balancing the touchscreen friendly Windows 8? Dabbling in some multi-touch before needing the accuracy of the mouse’s 1000dpi mouse tracking? Being bipolar about mouse and trackpads?
The Xenon is pretty cheap at £26-odd but I can’t help but think it’s either ruining two independently good things or combining together to create awfulness. Works with PC, not with Mac. [Gigabyte via Engadget]

A Retro Mouse and Mouse Mat-Combo Is Your RSI-Inducing Deal of the Day
This Mouse-Keyboard Combo Is Smaller Than Your Smartphone
It's Time to Exterminate the Mouse
wouldn’t it be better to actually get one and try it rather than look at pictures?
I second that – Why create such a negative article about something you have not used – seems a tad silly.
Perhaps they were not given a sample and could not afford the £26
Juding stuff before it’s released seems to be the Gizmodo US way, just look at the “reviews” for the Steve Jobs movie, etc.
Apple Magic mouse anyone ?
No thanks – it’s one of the worst mice ever created only slightly less bad than the mighty mouse.
Never used the magic mouse, but the mighty mouse is tragic.
I love my Magic Mouse. I can’t think of thing i’d complain about it.
I’m confused.
Owning a lenovo (previously IBM) thinkpad laptop with an additional USB mouse, i have three pointing devices attached.
In my opinion:
mouse > thinkpad joystick > trackpad.
The trackpad is a workable last resort solution given the restrictions of a laptop, but it’s by far the worst pointing device of the lot. I cannot see how merging it onto a mouse would help.
By far the better upgrade, IMHO, is the razer naga mouse i use on my desktop: adding a bank of twelve hardware buttons to the side of a mouse is immensely more useful than adding a trackpad to one…
Ive always wondered about the extra buttons on high – end mice, does it not get confusing?
I’m sure Mr. Ive has more important things to wonder about..
Does take a bit of getting used to i admit.
With the naga they do supply a set of stick-on training blobs to alternate on the buttons to get you used to the positions of them.
Took me a few weeks, but now i can access the full bank of 12 with my thumb by touch alone.
Makes all the difference for a lot of games. ie Mass Effect 3: rather than pause game and assign biotic attacks, you can fire them all real-time with your thumb
That actually makes a lot of sense.
