The Raspberry Pi has had some pretty great software upgrades of late, first was the super-speedy Raspbian, then a dash of Google Chrome, and now a big chunk of Ice Cream Sandwich. Android 4.0 is coming to your slice of Pi real soon.
I have to say, the idea of having an almost up-to-date Android-powered smart TV for under £30 is really, really appealing. I’ll hold my hand up and say I’m no hacker — I neither have the skills nor the patience to toil away at that kind of thing — but getting Android 4.0 running might be the gateway drug I need to get me into it.
Right now, hardware-accelerated graphics and video are running smoothly, but there are a few more things to work out. Hopefully the developer, Naren, can get everything done and dusted quickly so we can get our Ice Cream Sandwich-on soon. In the mean time, check out the video — it really doesn’t look half bad, and pretty fast too, all things considered. [Raspberry Pi]
Thanks Darrell!

What Is Ice Cream Sandwich?
Google's Now Testing Ice Cream Sandwich On the Nexus S
The Ice Cream Sandwich SDK Is Now Live
It is but a short hop from ICS to Jellybean, Hopefully the dev will move on to that once he has this stable.

I can’t wait to get this on my Pi!
Another weird thing is that with XBMC in the works for Android as well as the Pi itself you’ll be able to get a 2 for1 deal.
yeah that will be cool, my pi should be here soon… i think its about another three weeks…… can’t wait.
I wonder… would it be theoretically possible to “build” one of these, stick it inside your computer, have a “link” to it on your, say, Windows desktop, and when you click it, it fires up the Pi and Android, then when you click off, bazing, Windows again…
Why would you need to ? Your Windows PC could run a virtual version of Android (or whatever) considerably faster than the Raspberry Pi could manage.
This is actually pretty awesome.
I’m seriously considering one of these to use as a “Smart TV”, ie. have it permanently connected to my TV via HDMI so I can watch Netflix, BBC iPlayer etc.
Interesting times.
