For those of you who like to get your Beeb catching-up done on your iOS device of choice, you’ll be glad to hear that the latest update adds some much-wanted extras that you’ll soon take for granted.
The BBC has listened to consumers and gifted improved video performance; better accessibility including Voice Over controls; retina graphics for those on the new iPad; a few general bug fixes and a bit of tidying to make everything extra spunky. Of course, it’s all for free (except for that pesky TV Licence…) Cheers, Auntie! [App Store]

hang on, you need a TV licence for iPlayer on your iPad/iPod/Phone?
You only need a TV licence if you watch the BBC live (or record live content). You don’t need one for watching everything else on iPlayer. Although i’m not sure how the TV Licencing chaps police this.
You need a TV Licence to watch live broadcasts.

Technically, for the live streaming stuff I think you do. But for catch-up, I’m pretty sure you don’t. But I’m sure you have one anyway for that TV in your living room, right?
If you do not live in the UK then this lets you watch All the BBC shows anywhere in the world. So people outside the UK gotta pay
I believe it looks at your connection termination point and determines if you’re in the UK or not.
Hopefully the BBC will now get it’s finger out and produce an app for Android that doesn’t require flash, because it doesn’t appear to be listening to customers who don’t have an iDevice.
Support for Windows Phone makes me =(
Exactly. I doubt they will though as I’m guessing the people who make the decisions there are all iBots
Yay, finally!
Anyone with an apple TV know how well it works with airplay? I’m using XBMC, and it’s not being friendly.
At least the earlier version was very average. iPlayer had full screen Airplay, but you had to invoke the mirror option. This decreases the chance for high quality streams, and is an extra hassle. Without the mirror switched on, you get an error message.
I haven’t tried the update yet since this afternoon, but it wasn’t working for me then then. Videos would just time out. So, I don’t know if they have improved to proper Airplay in this update (like ABC (Australia) and RTE (Ireland) have). I do hope they don’t take the Channel 4 path who blocked Airplay in their last update, taking a phenomenal leap backwards.
I don’t have a TV licence, but I listen to the radio in my car, is that allowed? I’ve always wondered.
You don’t need a licence to listen to the radio (not since 1971 when the radio only licence was abolished).
