LG’s Smart TV Alliance has expanded, with a new selection of chipmakers and software developers joining the joint venture put together by LG, Philips and Toshiba, bringing hope of a future standard for smart TV apps.
The big news is that mobile hardware maker Qualcomm has come onboard, with the Alliance now promising that a public launch of the smart TV standard, plus some apps to play on it, could be in the hands of the first wave of users by September.
A second version of the SDK is due before the end of this year, which will allow members of the alliance to ensure their 2013 products are compatible with the “open” Smart TV app format. Apps built with the initial SDK ought to be on show at IFA this week. [LG]
