This boring looking cable and app combo is your key to enormous Android fun, with the pair able to unlock USB file transfers and game controller connectivity even in Android phones and tablets that don’t support USB mounting.
The USB OTG cable works in association with the Nexus Media Importer app, which is compatible with any Android device running version 3.2 of Google’s OS or higher. Install that, plug the cable in, then laugh as Google’s bizarre decision to restrict USB access on the Nexus 7 disappears.
There are other mounting apps available to add this functionality to the Nexus 7, but they require the faff of rooting your device first. This one’s root and fuss free. [Mobile Fun via Pocket-Lint]

I’d recommend a cheaper cable than that one (sorry if they were a sponsor Giz!)…

It does the job.
Do you need an app like that for the Xoom to be able to do the same? I bought a USB adapter for mine but it never worked, I’ve never figured out if it was a faulty adapter or if it was restricted by Android for the Xoom
There’s a free, stripped down version of this app called ‘Nexus Photo Viewer’. Just follow the link and look at the related apps.
If you can test whether this works on your Xoom, chances are the full app will work too.
Oh, and don’t forget to format your drive as a FAT32 file system. NTFS and ext3 won’t work.
I’m fairly sure the Xoom is meant to have native usb support without the need for an app, so its probably that my USB keys are in NTFS
Why not just use Airdroid?
