Yesterday, Microsoft launched its new email service, Outlook, and achieved the impossible: it’s bloody brilliant. Now, early-adopters are swarming over usernames — and some have managed to snag email addresses that you’d think Microsoft should have kept to one side.
The Verge has reported that, so far, some rather famous names have had their email addresses grabbed:
- steveballmer@outlook.com (claimed by PC Pro)
- ballmer@outlook.com (which has now spawned the excellent Ballmer on Ballmer)
- gates@outlook.com (also featuring on Ballmer on Ballmer)
- donotreply@outlook.com (snagged by Ryan Hoffman)
- good@outlook.com (OK, so that one’s just amusing)
All of which are quite amusing, but it’s odd that Microsoft hasn’t reserved addresses like donotreply. That leads us to suspect, then, that there must be plenty more where they came from — so let us know if you’ve signed up with a particularly good one. [Verge]

The Reason Why Your Email Address Has an @ in It
It’s incredible that Steve Ballmer was not taken and implies little or no internal testing of the product. Surely as the head of the company he should have had an account and tried it out before subjecting us to it.
So you deduct that from the fact that out of around 6 different variations, like Steve.Ballmer or Sballmer or maybe even just Steve that he has never seen it?
Typical Google FUD :p
No. I did not deduct that. I considered it IMPLIED. Also all the variations you gave are lesser than SteveBallmer (except maybe Steve, which would just be egotistical). Frankly I neither know nor care if Ballmer has tested this service, I was just voicing an observation that struck me, that’s hardly FUD.
All that it implies is that if he did try it, he didn’t use that username. Nothing more..
Have you ever seen the ballmer videos on youtube? Egotistical is exactly what he is lol!
He is the CEO of one of the biggest companies in the world – you have to be somewhat egotistical to get to that position anyway, but to get there with a company the size of Microsoft, it is an inevitability and to some extent a requirement.
spam@….
I had GizmodoUK@outlook.com within seconds of its release.
Oooooh, cybersquatting. Kat’s going to send the heavies round

mwaahaha at outlook.com
Just realised that typing all these email addresses is just asking for a spambot to come along and pick them up.
slightly unrelated but does anyone know what the incoming mail server is for the new outlook.com addresses, trying to set up mine on my mac and mail needs the server address. Is it imap and therefore simply imap.outlook.com?
forename.surname@outlook.com
I’m sure the majority of you will forget the username that you have registered in approximately… 2 and a half weeks!
That will be embarrassing for them as I figure the majority of people in the signup goldrush are just trying to register their own names.
Yeah exactly.. I signed up my name so that in future if I decide to migrate I can do so without having to add 9283423 to the end of my name!
Likewise, but I consider the migration unlikely.
Also likewise.
I’ve signed up a couple of my names, probably won’t use hem but it’s nice to see an empty inbox!
I did consider signing up with a couple of different usernames, but then I realised I don’t see any true value in that!
Give it 5 minutes , you’ll have a spam filled one.
I snapped up iain.buchanan for obvious reasons and also spatchmo as there’s an american kid using Spatchmo, damn him, and he snapped up the FB account before i got a chance so i had to refer to my old tag which is, again for obvious reasons, bigiainb. but these days its all about the spatchmo.
