The good people of the internet have shown that they're not a miserable bunch of losers determined to make ladies cry into their Facebook windows, by amassing well over a million quid to secure the legacy of bonkers/ahead-of-his-time inventor Nikola Tesla.
The money raise was triggered by site The Oatmeal, which began asking for cash back in the summer to help acquire and restore the remains of Tesla's New York laboratory. The actual fund is now sitting at $1.2m, but thanks to matching grants from the NY authorities and a new matching pledge from angel investor Dusan Stojanovic, it's now well over the $2m mark in total -- around £1.2m in our old pounds.
There are still six days to make a contribution, with The Oatmeal arranging a Kickstarter-style collection of limited edition Tesla bits and bobs for those who donate. [The Oatmeal -- Thanks Darrell]
