Would you wear this to play games? Would you wear this if it cost, say, £149 and came with a free copy of Half-Life 3 in the box? Oh yes, excited now, eh? It could happen too, in some distant future, as this bonkers headset is one of PC publisher Valve’s long-rumoured pieces of hardware.
A reporter from the New York Times was granted an exclusive go on Valve’s insane immersion goggles, which were revealed as part of a tour around the gaming giant. Little is said about what actually powers them, if they’re 3D, what they run and so forth, but it’s still an exciting teaser into the creative world of Valve and the various prototypes it has knocking about.
Valve’s previously denied rumours of a move into hardware (despite still advertising hardware-related jobs), although it’s been very keen to push the idea of a future in which our lives are dominated by wearable computing. It just needs to work on the design a little. [NYT via Gizmodo Australia]

I was wondering if they were going to do something with the Oculous Rift (http://oculusvr.com/), which seemed promising and Valve were among the people on the Kickstarter video who were talking enthusiastically about it.
I’d love to see some kind of decent VR system for the home and Valve seem to be just the people to provide it.
Great article as well, thanks for linking it.
well you’ve got a camera mounted and QR codes stuck all around the place so its going to be some form of augmented reality rather then a full world game…
I agree! Looking at the photo, the wearer is able to see out of these goggles into the real world rather than be plunged into an exclusively computer generated world. That and the QR codes on the walls suggest an augmented reality device rather than a 3D virtual reality type device.
i would get this as im a sucker for tech, but i still have not finished HL2.. how am i going to look playing HL3.. a cheat is how.. i best load up steam tonight..
If this aint coming till HL3 then we have a long long wait ahead of us.
Sorry, but Valve wouldn’t get on the VR boat when a load of developers just ordered the Oculus Rift.
…and when Valve actually backed up Oculus Rift project.
That too…
Augmented Reality??
I’d need a whacking dose of beer goggles to make these goggles look attractive……
