Asus is said to be working on an updated version of its popular Nexus 7 tablet, which could be on sale within a couple of months. The big and indeed only hardware change? 3G support.
The news comes via a source of Android site Modaco, which claims the updated 3G Nexus 7 model could go on sale within six weeks. Techradar’s talked to Asus which declined to make any comment on the subject of such a quick hardware refresh, while network O2 said it hadn’t a clue about it either.
Still, might be worth keeping an eye on Google’s Play Store, if the lack of 3G support is your only excuse not to treat yourself to one of Google’s lovely little tabs. [Modaco via Techradar]

Asus and Google's Nexus Tablet to Ditch 3G Connectivity and go Wi-Fi Only Next Week?
Hmmmmmm, really not sure about this one. It could be a reaction to the threatened launches of the iPad Mini and new Kindle Fire. Reasoning that if they have 3G then the Nexus would be out of date, but it does seem like that would be a kneejerk reaction to things they must have known about or suspected during the build. Also the lauch was so recent that they could simply have said “we are planning a 3G version which will launch soon”. Personally I am happy with my Wifi only model and use tethering via my phone when out and about.
I’m not to fussed about the lack of 3G (apart from Asphult 7 not opeing with out a connection!).
If they updated it they would need to offer more storage. Initially I thought 16GB was good enough for all my app needs and maybe store a movie or 2 when I have to travel.
But no, it’s already got 9.6GB of apps installed!
Yeah 32GB might be enough to tempt me
I would probably sell mine and upgrade if that happened.
There is a wire you can get to add a USB so you can have all your movies and media separate, but it would be balls to have your Apps saved externally.
How many apps do you have? Are you seriously in any danger of running out of app space?
Surely it’s the movies, music and pictures that eat up all the space?
I’ve a few games which have taken a good chunk GTA, Dead Trigger, Mass Effect, Shadow Gun, Asphalt etc all take up a fair amount of storage.
That’s a lot of heavy-duty games.
Does it approach 16GB though, or even 8?
I agree that it doesn’t take up all the space, but I think in total I have around 4-5gb of gaming on my Nexus so it wouldn’t really work with an 8gb but it is fine on my 16gb. Add that to offline spotify playlists, other apps, and a couple of films and it is getting a bit.
Just got N.O.V.A. 3 yesterday and that takes up 2GB! And with Real Racer 2 taking up a gig that’s already a massive chunk of the space
You people and your massive games
I only ask because I’ve got an 8GB Nexus and I’m struggling to fill even half of it. I don’t play ‘serious’ games on it, and I generally don’t use it to store media, as I own other devices that are better suited to those tasks.
However, I do have a shed-load of apps installed on the thing…
Yeah it’s really just the games that clog it.
I don’t have music on it as its an awkward size for it to be a portable music player. And I would only put movies on it when traveling.
I got a tablet as a lighter alternative to my ‘desktop replacement’ laptop. Apart from the basics (Chrome, Currents, Youtube, Mail) and the games, there are only a few apps I use. Like Pocket & Flixster.
Are any of the apps your using must haves?
Yeah, similar case here. I don’t own a laptop, so I basically use the thing as my main browser around the house, on the sofa, etc. Also comes in handy for basic tasks when travelling.
I use Pocket as well – one of the few apps with a decent 7in interface.
iMediaShare is great for putting pictures and videos up on a DLNA TV, or other DLNA rendering device. That almost gets around the lack of HDMI output on the Nexus. It even works with YouTube clips.
Personally, I fine Wapedia to be a better way to access Wikipedia (as well as a couple other Wikis), but that’s personal taste. I use it a lot though, and the layout has had a few minor tweaks for 7in.
IMDB has a nice tablet interface, that’s another regular. I also use iPlayer a lot, which I had to sideloaded to the Nexus.
Also, the Swiftkey tablet keyboard, not because the JB keyboard is in any way poor, but just because I’ve used it on every phone I’ve owned since my HTC Hero, and it feels odd to use anything else now.
Haha! And people were on about how 3G is not needed on the Nexus 7 and how Google was so forward thinking and smart to leave it out! Well, there you have it!
I think you missed the fact that this is just a rumour still..
And that nobody said that…
I’m curious, how many people with WiFi tablets really miss 3G? I find that Bluetooth tethering to my Android phone is so fast and simple, that I really couldn’t be bothered to pay for another data plan just for the convenience of not having to tether it.
I’m sure mobile data is invaluable to a number of people who pull down a lot of data on the move, but perhaps a small minority?
Given that a lot of tablet plans have quite restricted data allowances for quite a high premium, I don’t really see the benefit of getting a 3G tablet. Hotspotting is more than adequate for the limited times I have my tablet but don’t have Wifi.
3G doesn’t bother me; I can just tether it with my phone, what bothers me is the lack of storage space, I am missing an SD card slot; I can’t fit my music on 16GB, let alone apps and a film. Would also like a HDMI slot and SD card slot (perhaps via an adapter to avoid having millions of slots)
Why not use Google Music and store it on cloud and then download what tunes you want to play (if necessary) Ive been using it for a few months and its great, even going and deleting all my music off my hard drive on my computer. Which was nice.
