One of the biggest differentiating factors from last iPhone to this one is the iPhone 5′s longer screen. It’s the first thing anyone notices, and the lengthening of the display makes apps feel a lot less cramped. Here are a few of the more popular apps that have already been optimised, next to their old iPhone 4S counterparts.
Pocket
Evernote
Facebook
Flipboard
MLB At Bat
New York Times
Pinterest
Comixology

*don’t use the hash key for ‘hashtags’ when not on twitter
Usually I’d agree, but to defend my hash tagging:

Yeah, I don’t think that Giz UK supports the US site’s discussion feature.
Like Scyby said, Giz UK comments don’t support hashtags. But thanks for pointing out our error.
Can’t tell if sarcastic or not..
Definitely sarcastic. Kat excels at sarcastic.
I couldn’t possibly comment on such a matter.
I’ll assume genuine, and stand down from my hashtag-shenanigans.
If sarcastic I’ll point out that the rules aren’t available when I tried to find out if my hashtag was appropriate – http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/commenting-guidelines
Either way, I now feel part of the Giz UK family after years of lurking!
Welcome! But make that singular, ie, one year — we launched September 29th last year, after all
And yes, the commenting guidelines are taking their sweet time to be written… *glares at editor* *feels death glare from herself*
Breaking news longer screen = longer apps
I know, magical isn’t it?
To many iPhone users, this is somehow a novel concept.
Perfect excuse to lay down another £600!
It’s not magical. It’s Revolutionary!
Now you can watch movies in wide screen!!!
(On a still small screen, if you convert the movie to the right format & compress it to shit cos you ain’t fitting many movies on it with out removable storage).
So what happened to Comixology? Seems exactly the same.. Maybe just moved down a touch!
I wonder if They can do a comparison of what the G+ App looks like?
Stretch out G+, does it become F-? Time for mythbusters…….
I see what you did here!
‘H-’ surely?
think everything looks the same just taller and those apps that dont fit the new screen will be letterboxed so basically
everything looks the same just some stuff maybe taller
It’s so fresh, so innovative, i’m sure the Android and WP8 market are kicking themselves for not thinking of it first, Apple rule and this just goes to show why.
lol I am quite amazed they even did an article about this
This is Gizmodo, the “tech blog” that everyone pokes fun at behind it’s back… need I say more?
Yup, who needs apps which automatically scale without having to be redone every time the manufacturer decides on a new screen size.
Wow… they look…. longer. Revolutionary.
p.s. Cat, you got the Pintrest image wrong (it’s Flipboard again)
Don’t you know in 3 years time when the iPhone becomes wider because people’s hands have become fatter, apps will become… Wider!
p.s. redmamoth, you got Kat’s name wrong
So as per the pics above, most things are no different. The longer screen serves no use other than if you watch a movie you get a a smidge wider of a screen. Who watches full movies on their phone regularly and doesn’t now need glasses?
Saw this on the US site recently, wrote a comment on an iPhone 5 article at the time saying “please don’t stoop to this level, Giz UK”
We’re all smart enough to know what a couple extra inches of screen real estate are going to do to our apps, an article on this isn’t necessary.
Except that comixology app, wtf is the difference??
Well with it being app based, its a question of whether the real-estate will mean more information being included, or the app being re-scaled for a better viewing experience.
Take evernote vs Flipboard. Each takes a different approach, and some people like to know what they’re getting into with their most-used apps before they upgrade.
WTF! was it so difficult to…
i – line up the image pairs along the top edge – so they have the same start point.
ii – show exactly the same pages on each image pairing – so we can accurately see how much “extra” is shown on the iphone5 screen.
it seems some sites are actually showing more, and some are just stretching content to fit.
