An anonymous case manufacturer has been showing off a physical mockup of the iPhone 5 at Europe’s IFA consumer electronics fair this weekend. While it doesn’t tell us anything we don’t already know, this video from the Verge does a good job of highlighting the differences we’re expecting to show up between the old and new device.
Of course, there’s no telling whether the design we’re expecting to see next week is entirely genuine, and at any rate this is only a dummy shell which shows off the possible aesthetic features of the new device. But apparently the case manufacturer is confident enough in the rumours that it’s already got its products for the new device in production so they’re ready to ship as soon as possible. One thing’s certain: we don’t have too long to wait now before we find out for certain what the next iPhone will be like. [Verge]

The rate of rumours has begun to accelerate.
So if there is a chance in acceleration there must be a force applied. Which I guess is correct because a lot of these iPhone articles feel pretty forced
I wouldn’t mind electroplating that back panel with bronze. That would look pretty cool against the black. Gold would just be tacky. But then maybe customizing an iPhone is tacky. Or even owning one? I’m too old for this sh*t.
Isn’t everyone.
Did he just say notably thinner? People will be holding these things back to front while walking around just so people can see that it’s the new model, because everything else looks exactly the same.
Also, does anyone know how apps will accommodate the new aspect ratio because apart from stretching the entire app the only feasible option is to add back borders to around 300,000 apps.
I’m not sure anyone *knows* how they’ll handle it, aside from Apple.
Black bars, surely? Stretching the apps out would look very untidy, and that’s not Apple’s style. That’s how they handled the new aspect ratio of the iPad when it was first released.
Also, I wouldn’t expect it to take very long for the devs to adapt their apps to the new aspect ratio. Some of the more text-heavy apps may not need any significant modifications at all, just an update to the new iOS 6 API level.
Games might require a bit more effort though.
Why don’t we just wait and see…
No need to pour more oil in the fire…
It’s a bit longer….that’s it? This is no more of an upgrade on the 4s then the 4s was on the 4. My girlfriend has an iPhone 4s and compared to even the Galaxy S2, it feels clunky, small and outdated. This doesn’t look big enough and thin enough and enough of a departure from the 4s for me.
There’s problems with the OS too. OSX was revolutionary…but now it feels dated and restrictive.
The thing about the iPhone is that Apple only make the one model, so it has to appeal to everyone. If they made a 4.5 inch phone, some existing users just wouldn’t like it because they would think it’s too large. This new taller, thinner iPhone is only a marginal departure from the current device, so it shouldn’t ruffle anyone’s feathers. It’s inoffensive, and that’s the way Apple like it.
You could say the same about OSX and iOS. Apple want to keep the user experience consistent, so users don’t become resistant to accepting new versions. Problem is, they both now *look* a bit dated next to the competition.
