TechCrunch’s Alexia Tsotsis has sources at Google telling her that they hope to have a proper Google Maps iOS 6 app “before Christmas.” Not next week, not next month. Before Christmas. Ugh.
That said, it could mean next week, or next month, but it’s not exactly promising. After using Apple maps, that was not exactly the news I was hoping to hear. Hopefully it won’t be that long. [TechCrunch]

This is good, it means Santa will actually be able to find the places he has to deliver to.
That’s why he never arrived. He is an iPhone user, and was actually thinking he didn’t exist.

Here is a good one. They should schedule it for the same date we get an edit button.
All this talk about maps, I have a questions.
How do Google, Aplle, etc. make money on map apps?
With Google it’s simple. Map use provides data on what you do, where you go etc. Google uses this data to better target ads to you. since better targeted ads provide more sales, advertisers are happier and spend more money on Google adverts.
For Apple, I don’t know, but I suspect their game plan is much the same.
Apple are probably trying to save money and hurt Google’s bottom line by not partnering with them. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were prepared to make a tactical loss on what they get out of the data.
Wow, it’s new Avatar city round here at the moment.
I know, right? I caught the fever.
Fortunately you got the directions to new avatar city from Google rather than Apple.
Thought I’d join the trend and update mine – hasn’t caught up yet though.
I suspect this is Google making hay with Apple’s bad publicity.
They’re having to trade off how much they can gain by tempting people to Android because of its better maps, compared to mow much they could gain from proper Google maps on iOS.
Clearly, there wasn’t as much to gain from holding out on youtube ( http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/youtube/id544007664?mt=8 ).
If people didn’t have a chance to see how bad Apple Maps is they would not rush into the arms of Google Maps when it is released. I suspect that there are a number of “fringe” Apple users, people who only got it because they saw all the ads or read all the puff, for whom maps is a major feature, something they use every day. If they hear all these stories about Apple Maps being shit, they may look elsewhere. I’ve seen a lot of ads about Nokia Maps on WP7 recently, do you think they knew something?
I thought Google put their prices up so Apple ditched them? Unfortunately, whilst giving two fingers to Google, they also gave two fingers to every ios6 user too.
Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face(time users).
Well obviously Google put the prices up, The original contract was negotiated before the release of the iPhone and you know how Apple love to squeeze their suppliers. I suspect this time round Google had the confidence that a 50% share of the smartphone market can bring not to get ripped off for supplying a quality product.
I would have loved to be on the Google negotiating team.
So, your new phones will have larger screens, so they’ll be able to display more of our maps…….(strokes chin)……and it’s widescreen you say…….(strokes chin)…..larger wider maps will cost ya!
I’m holding off on iOS6 until it’s sorted!
Think this is what they call a tactical application release by Google.
Sits back whilst watching Apple hang itself.
