Motorola, the phone maker that’s owned by Google and therefore really ought to be above this sort of thing, has put together an advert mocking Apple’s disastrous decision to switch to Apple Maps.
The ad, which Motorola has hashtagged #iLost and distributed via its US Twitter account, shows the now familiar image of a laughably vague Apple Maps location guesstimate placed alongside a more accurate and useful image offered by the reliable old Google Maps, which Motorola includes as the default option on it many Android models.
It’s a bit childish of a company like Motorola, especially given its less than glorious history of ruining Android with some terrible interface customisations of its own. But still quite funny. [CNET via Android Authority]

Not /that/ childish, see that your competition is failing at something (especially after saying how wonderful it was) and use that to promote your offering which is better – and that your competition used to use.
Seems like a straightforward business/marketing thang to me
not everyone is a fan of the cheap shot.
It is pretty standard in the US – just watch TV in the US for 10 minutes and you’ll see pretty much every ad has named competition comparions.
Not really competition when you’re so far behind, more like trying to be one of the big boys
“Motorola Hastily Cobbles Together Apple-Mocking Maps Ad” – looks like you got the words in the wrong order Gary, “Motorola Ad Mocking Apple’s Hastily Cobbled Together Maps” is right.
Bazinga!
Do you think if I had created a company called Really Really Ace Map company Apple would have bought me?
I guess it makes Motorola feel better about themselves as they make such ugly looking phones and then mock an OS made by a company, when they just use Google’s and stick a butt ugly skin over it
well played Motorola, well played.
iPhone owner harp14?
Funnily enough no, I have a GNexus. However I’m happy to use any tech from any company but watching companies be that childish is annoying.
Only as childish as those “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” adverts that Apple used to make…
Ah, Motorola – I remember them…..
So why is this article picking on Motorola and not the world’s largest corporation that released a sub-standard product ? Go Motorola and every other phone company that should be quite rightly ripping Apple a new one.
Because it’s making out that they deserve to be picked on for one released product that’s not perfect. I’m pretty sure even Google maps had problems when starting up. When other companies do the same thing nobody bats an eyelid, nobody has a perfect track record. Ripping a company for it is pathetic expecially when you’re as useless as Motorola.
You can’t compare google maps to IMaps. iMaps has been forced on consumers instead of the better alternative. Google maps wasn’t forced onto people it was just one of a number of options.
Google had already done maps before releasing it on Android
So ? Jumping into a market you have no experience in with a substandard product should be seen as a good idea or something to be admired ?
They wanted to have an offering that came with the phone that had the basic features other nav apps have such as turn by turn, they had to do it at one point. The longer they’d have left it, the harder it would be for them to catch up as it relies on usage data and reports from users. For such a massive task they’ve done a great job in my eyes, to expect a maps app to be perfect right away is silly but it was a necessity for them to do it in my eyes.
