If you’re holding out on buying an iPhone until the new one is out, mark down Apple’s just-announced September 12 event on your calendar: that could be the day the phone is revealed. Posted by The Loop, the invite says the event will begin at 6pm GMT at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco.
If you want to read into the teaser image Apple sent out, the shadow of the 12 is a 5, implying that Apple just might actually call the next iPhone the iPhone 5. [The Loop]

The iPhone 5 Will Be Released From £529 on September 21st, Pre-Orders Start September 14th
Open WebOS 1.0 Coming in September
Rumour: Apple Fans, Start Camping Out Now -- iPhone 5's Due on September 21
Yay!!! Only 9 more days till the iPhone 5s rumours start
Nah, Samsung will have bought Apple by then and…. oh…. maybe I’ve said too much….. /rumourmongering
More likely the other way around. Apple is I thought the largest company (in cash) in the world? And they would finally have their hands on the technology they so require for the future products, such as flexible displays.
All said, it will of course never happen as Samsung have their fingers in too many pies, but it would stop them building Windows phones.
Did you know Samsung built the tallest building in the world? It’s in Dubai, and sky high!
You clearly missed the /rumourmongering part of my post. I. Was. Not. Being. Serious., but thank you for taking me seriously!
/explainingmypost
You should take that to The Sun. They seem to publish any crap put through their letterbox
Don’t you mean 9 more days until the iPhone6 rumours start? hehe
HA HA HA HA iPhone 5! This is a giant F U to all the people who were claiming it would be called the iPhone 6… YOU’RE STUPID.
And those that were calling it the iPhone 7 – crazy, crazy I tell yer!!!!!
Wow Tom, that’s a mature and classy response you’ve got there.
Well, I had a lot of mature and classy responses from people claiming to me it was going to be called the iPhone 6.
Or Apple’s just using the name because that’s what it has been referred to for the past two years. The iPhone 5 has always been ‘the iPhone with the new design’, so when the 4S came out looking identical to the 4, journalists continued to call the future design the iPhone 5, presumably so as to not confuse people by calling it the iPhone 6. Anyway, for the past few months myself and many others have agreed that it should be called the new iPhone, like the iPad. It would be daft for the iPhone to be the only physical product in their lineup still to have a numerical system.
So please, calm down. You haven’t won anything, and they’re not stupid. iPhone 6 made sense in terms of relating to iOS 6 and this being the sixth iPhone. The iPhone 5 made sense simply so that customers could see it was the mythical new design they were looking for (although 6 could also do that), ie. a marketing point of view, and the fact that 2012 is the fifth anniversary of the iPhone. The new iPhone makes sense as it matches the iPad’s naming, by the fact it sheds the numbers, and it would be stupid for the iPhone to be the only product in Apple’s lineup still using numbers, as I said before. So no one is stupid, no matter what they believed it would be called. I personally thought the new iPhone (and initially, the iPhone 6) would be the better names, but I understand the progression of 3GS, 4, 4S and 5 that some will want to see.
I don’t understand how you people can believe this.
3G 3GS 4 4S 6? What? Skipping the 5 and the 5S? By that logic the next iPhone would be called the 7.
Apple called it 5, end of story.
You’re wrong. It’s going to be called the iPhone 4GS.. That’s right, you heard it here first!
That’s not what I’m saying. I’m agreeing with you really, I just didn’t see the need for you to post such an immature response. It sounded like something I’d see on YouTube, rather than here.
Anyway, I’ll try and clarify, as I realise my comment was slightly misleading. I believe the iPhone should be called the new iPhone, like the iPad. I think they should drop the numbers all together. However, I was simply stating that I believed the iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 could both make sense – it just depends on which way you look at it. The 5 makes more sense for marketing. The 6 makes more sense if you look at a) the version of iOS and b) which generation of the iPhone this will be. But in my opinion, calling it the new iPhone would have made more sense. We still have to wait and see what Apple officially decides to call it when it is announced next Wednesday.
Some people have a hard time understanding that technical version numbers and product names are often two different things that exist for entirely unrelated purposes.
You know that Windows 8 is technically Windows NT 6.2?
Nobody is talking about technical version numbers here. We’re talking about product names.
*sigh* My point exactly.
I’m just saying that if someone’s going to insist that the next iPhone must be the iPhone 7 just because it’s the seventh iPhone, then they’re not appreciating the difference between a technical version number and a marketing name.
Oh, apologies for taking your comment out of context!
No problem, that’s a hazard of the interwebs.
May I just say, I have no trouble in understanding the difference – I pointed out the advantages to each name (5,6 and new), and stated that I initially believed ’6′ to be the correct name, but I now think it should be called the new iPhone. It makes more sense now they have dropped the numbers in the iPad line, and they’ve never had them in the iPod line (other than saying X generation).
And I didn’t know Windows 8 was NT 6.2, actually. Perhaps a better example though would be Windows 95. That was also known as Windows 4, so I assume Windows 98 was known as 5, Me was 6, XP was 7, 7 was 8 and 8 is 9. Which just sounds confusing to me. But I do get your point.
My point is merely that marketing names do not have to be chosen for any logical reason. They can be entirely arbitrary, and are often chosen for no other reason than because that’s the name that the public expect it to be. It’s the name that helps to sell the most units. It doesn’t have to make any *logical* sense, and often… it doesn’t.
Windows ‘Vista’, for example?!?
This doesn’t change just because there’s a number in the marketing name. It’s still arbitrary.
No way! They’re going to call it “The Iphone”
I understand that. It’s just my opinion that it should be called ‘the iPhone’. Then we won’t ever have to have this conversation again.
Oh yeah, I missed out Vista, so Windows 8 is really Windows 10. Well, Microsoft did want to forget it, I guess. Oh well.
Oh my word, you guys are arguing at length over the name. Face palm 7S.
In my defence, I joined in half way…
Don’t forget kids to get on Google+ and #boycottapple, it is he very least they deserve.
Are you being serious?
You’ve all got it wrong. it’s the iPhone 12 with a 5″ display !
I heard Siri 2.0 is an actual person and the big round button is the door to her little house.
It’s 100% True, she was on “The Big Bang Theory”
Will Giz be there?
Ha! They have dared to publish something the dictator didn’t like and now they are banned. That is probably one of the reasons why blogs don’t bad mouth thei antics much, fear of being banned.
I think Giz UK should be treated as an individual and allowed to go!
Who gives a shit? it’s Windows Phone day tomorrow!!
Here here.
September 18th for HTC’s Windows Phone event just announced too!
Yeah, it is a little harsh of Apple to do this. I would have preferred to have seen them announce it after Microsoft/Nokia’s event, as WP8 looks great, but I guess business is business.
Everybody get up singing
1,2,3,4, Five will make you get down now
(Baby bring it on, bring it on now)
Everybody get up singing
1,2,3,4, Five will make you get down now
It’s getting called the iPhone Pistorius because it won’t have legs, and will cry foul when it doesn’t win.
Sounded good in your head right?
You’re one to talk, Mr. 5ive Singer..
Yer mum.
i don’t moan at all on here but there was no need for that.
I don’t understand, a joke placed on facts. it isn’t like i was not being nasty in any shape or context to anyone but apple mr fanboi. A could have made a crippled phone joke, it didn’t. Grow up.
I honestly couldn’t give a fuck about apple. Android here mate but am no really that much of a tech-head to care who uses what. Just am making a point – shouldn’t take the piss out of him because he’s got no legs. See Frankie Boyle. He’s opened a can of woop ass on that.
It was kind of a Frankie Boyle joke. I think the general consensus is that his jokes aren’t really that offensive, just risqué. So I’m with you on this one. There isn’t really anything wrong with it.
aye am getting your humour now. seen your renault israel thing.
Im thinking that 5 means apple are announcing five new products? iphone 6th gen iPod 5th gen new ipod nano iPad mini and a new apple tv
Why does the iPhone generate such an emotional response?
None of you are invited to my iPhone 5 fancy dress party anyway.
Haha – this is the best comment on this article. I’m sad about missing the party though. I was going to dress up as a Palm Pilot.
I think you’d be that guy that put loads of effort into the costume only to get there and realise that nobody knows what you are.
I’m going as a Nokia Express cover !! I have many costume changes throughout the night
