Doom-mongers and, err, analysts, down at the National Pig Association (yes, that’s a real organisation), have warned us of an imminent threat to the global pork supply, one of the most delicious consumed meats in the world. But how could the bacon run dry, and why?
Well, according to the BBC, the drought hit US maize harvest has dramatically increased the wholesale price of cereal, i.e pig grub. The escalating prices of the bacon-producing meat, could end the age of the cheap cuts or, worse still, force the already stretched farmers to shut down production. No-one. Panic. [BBC]

Good one
Could be an Islamic plot… (puts tinfoil hat on)
or Jewish, or Christian as all Abrahamic faiths advise against eating swine meat.
True although a)not met too many fundamental Christians or other Christians who refused a rack of pork ribs in the States, b) don’t think you’re wearing a tinfoil hat
I’m wearing a wig on top of my tinfoil hat! That way I’m always protected. Thinking one step ahead I am.

Life is no longer worth living
I’ll tell the Men.
But what will convince vegetarians meat is worth it?…
Isn’t this going to push the price of just about all food up?
Probably, because food companies seem obsessed with putting corn syrup in EVERYTHING!?
:O you mean using 100 kilos of food to make 1 kilo of food isn’t sustainable? I’m shocked…
So true. That coupled with the fact that meat from pigs is regularly proven to be the unhealthiest meat of them all.
It does taste good though
Huh? Really? I didn’t realize that pig farming was somehow so evil that it broke basic the laws of physics…
We raise pigs on our smallholding so our children can learn where food comes from and how to look after themselves with a modicrum of self-sufficiency. So let me educate you….
From six weeks to thirty weeks old our pigs will consume exaclty 300 kilos of feed (because that’s what we feed them). We butcher the pigs at 30 weeks and they yield on average of 75 kilos of meat. Yes there is 225 kilos of shit and gas – but that goes straight back onto the fields as fertilizer (plant food).
So you’d be much more accurate to say that 100 kilos cereal makes 25 kilos of human food and 70 kilos of plant (cereal) food and 5 kilos (approx) of gas.
If you are going to make a snarky point then at least be accurate…
I read that some breeds you can get almost half of its weight.
Ours have a pretty big space to roam around it so they are healthier and pretty active. If you cage them up you can get much better efficiency. However that’s not the message we are trying to send to the kids…
I’m going to raise my children in a cement factory so they know where concrete comes from. Then we’ll live in a field of wheat so they know where bread comes from.
I love it when parents take things so literal. Why don’t you just visit a farm or summat?
Although keeping chickens is okay because they’re cute.
I grew up on a living, working farm. So I’d kinda be letting the side down if I didn’t teach my kids what their ancestors have been doing for a very long time (even though I’m not a farmer myself).
Plus – it’s incredibly rewarding and I save a helluva lot of money on meat, eggs, veg, jams, jellies and honey. The pork ends up costing me about 2/3 of wholesale or 1/4 of retail.
Visiting a farm doesen’t teach you how to be self sufficient – it just shows you that other people can do it. You actually need to do it in order to learn the concepts and skills of 9how the puzzle goes together.
I’d much rather my kids idolize the natural world around them than the next video game or reality star (even though there is always time for video games), and I’d rather them be out and doing something with me (a leaning something) than being influenced by someone else…
I do like the idea of being self sufficient, but more so towards crops and whatnot. I actually come from farming stock too, in fact my ancestors’ caste is one of the farmer, and my father was raised on a farm. My brother-in-law was raised on a farm too which is doing really well up in Hull.
What I’m trying to say is I’m all about the farm!
Is fish meat considered a meat among the other meats? I’m guessing chicken is top, followed by sheep/goat and then beef? Or the other way round. Globally speaking of course.
I read recently that goat meat is most commonly eaten meat globally…..allegedly
Doesn’t surprise me. Goats, or breeds of goat and sheep, are very versatile animals and can exist in many more places than cows or even chickens. Given how large India and China are, as well as South America, Africa and the Middle East, I’m not surprised they’re numero uno. Factor in goat milk/cheese and they’re of more use than chickens too. Although chickens do lay eggs. Hmmm, I guess keeping both goats and chickens is the best way of maximizing the use of your space.
Cows are too big and pigs are too messy. Both eat too much.
A unicorn that lactates profusely and lays eggs would be most ideal though. Pleasing to the eye too.
I am from India and was surprised how uncommon goat meat is in the UK. Its the bestest tastiest meat ever.
Also mutton = goat meat in India whereas its sheep meat in UK.
Pigs are much greener than any ruminant animal (goats, sheep, cows) as they don’t really belch and therefore produce only a fraction of the methane that goats/coes/sheep do.
A Unicorn is a superhero horse so is also a belchin’, fartin’, greenhouse pollutin’ ruminant.
A pig that laid eggs would be the ultimate animal.
Maybe we could get Foghorn Leghorn and Petunia Pig out on the piss and see what happens….
I thought goat would’ve been the most common as well, but I came across this particular bit of info:
http://www.fao.org/ag/againfo/themes/en/meat/backgr_sources.html
Who proves regularly that pork is the unhealthiest meat of all???
Not the cows I guaranty, they have been actively campaigning for people to eat more pigs and chickens
I think I’ve found one possible solution to a lack of pig food…

Won’t we still get the bulk of our corn from europe and others? I guess any corn imports from the US is mostly processed foods. And do people actually think we feed pigs corn still? I know a local factory, it takes all the supermarket waste, chocolate, cereals, lard, anything and everything, and throws it all into a big mixer and makes pellet food for livestock. That is the rubbish pigs eat, they are pigs they’ll eat anything.
I currently live in Japan.
Bacon cannot be found anywhere.
Am going insane. Need help. Please.
Really? Where in Japan?
We used to find ample bacon in Hiroshima – was used in proper style Okonomiyaki.
Make your own. You can buy porkbellies at any traditional market. Porkbellies a kilo of salt and some saltpeter will yield some proper bacon. It’s very easy to make and you can buy all the ingredients in Tokyo or anywhere else…
Not to mention that Pork Belly with a dash of apple sauce and black pudding is one of the greatest meals known to man.
