Apple’s Phil Schiller said today that Apple had to work hard to make the new iPhone 5′s camera fit in the thinner body. So how good (or bad) are its photos? Look at these official and allegedly unprocessed images (you know, unlike some of Nokia’s).
The quality seems comparable to the previous generation, but I don’t see some of the enhancements they claim.
Apple says that the iPhone 5 has improved noise reduction, but it seems similar to Apple’s original iPhone 4S samples. Of course, we can’t really compare until we test them side to side. But the samples—which are supposed to be the best looking photos they can publicise—don’t look much different.
One curious thing is that Apple is not showing any night shots, even while they claim to have “better low-light performance.” We will have to wait to see what this really means in our review. [Apple]

it means they dont want to show night shots because they know when it comes to night shots the iphone is crap compared to 920, one x and S3
Night shots pretty much always look like crap unless if the subject is standing still. It’s just simple Physics.
i dick on physics….
Unfortunately, your dick is governed by the law of Physics too.
Simple Physics? LOL
Also, Look at the Nokia 920 photos.
I think the s3 uses the same sensor as the 4s
Photos taken by both the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 cameras will appear exactly the same to the human eye.
That’s what I think will be the case anyway.
These photo’s mean nothing, they look like there were shot in very bright sunlight.
We live in the UK, it’s often overcast, the light level drop is massive compared, photos will not often come out as well as that. We need real life shots to make a real judgement.
Good job Sony.
Need a Nokia Lumia 920 PureView with their springy thing vs. iPhone 5 camera and video showdown.
Yup, the more I see of the 920 the more intrigued I become …hmmm!
Erm, weren’t the nokia pictures also supposed to be unprocessed before it turned out they were. Hopefully Apple don’t think people will fall for the same shit twice.
Maybe its a double bluff. They think people won’t question them because they think Apple wouldn’t be stupid enough to try and pull that shit.. So they pulled that shit!
Or maybe they figure that, given that people continue to buy the iPhone each year, people really will fall for the same shit twice (or indeed 6 times)
Ah Ecosystem Lock-in.. Oh you could be an idiot like me and have brought apps on iOS, Android and Windows Phone
You know, despite the money I’ve spent on Android Apps (not as much as someone on iOS I’m sure due, to the higher instance of free apps on Android) that wouldn’t tie me to Andriod, All my music is in MP3 all my video in MP4, so not tied to anyone there either. If Google suddenly became Apple or Microsoft I would wave them goodbye without a moments hesitation.
Looks good, but, as others have said, they should’ve gone out of their way to find really murky lighting conditions to push the iso up and shoot some dull, uninteresting and grainy shots for our geek satisfaction.
The article is slightly misleading at clicking the pictures shows downscaled (therefore processed) versions that are 2MP or less and hence look good at 100%. If you view the original 8MP images you see that in keeping with most smartphone cameras, per-pixel detail is not particularly great due to the densely packed sensor.
Right, I’ll get the torches and pitchforks, you got get the angry mob
They are still on their way back from Finland.. Should be in Cupertino any day now
Damn Angry Mob, never where you need them to be, That makes me so angry, but there’s nothing I can do about it, which also makes me angry.
