Could sharp, pointy corners and box-like form factors join faux-wood finishes in the industrial design graveyard? Bauknecht, Whirlpool’s European brand, has collaborated with German designer Arman Emami to create this stunning round washing machine which looks like it belongs front and centre in your living room—not your basement.
In fact, a round washing machine makes some sense—the drum is a round, spinning cylinder. Why has it always had to conform to an oversized square box? A washing machine could naturally resemble jet engine, giving the impression that dirt is being sucked right off your clothing.
So what if you can’t stack this unit, or fold towels on top of it, or stash your laundry detergent and stain remover above it? When your washing machine looks like it was borrowed from The Jetsons’ apartmentIt’s hard to even lament the fact that this new design is no more efficient than current models.
Now, if only Bauknecht could let us know if and when this beauty goes on sale. Because right now, it’s just making us feel bad about the mundane white boxes hiding in our laundry rooms.

Nice design! Bit concerned about how it would perform on a spin cycle though, looks like it would topple over or vibrate around the room.
Thats ok, the lady can sit astride it, which will anchor it in place and give her that special tingle.
I once nearly got banned from a petrol station in the late 90′s for enjoying those sweet vibrations from the hose just a little too much as i filled my Mk1 Astra up, £20 a tank in those days, shocking.
I’d imagine it wouldnt vibrate a lot, seeing as tho the inner drum is spinning inside cylindrical housing. I don’t know exact scientific explanation but you know what I mean?
If the load inside is off centre, it will definitely vibrate.
I’m sure designers would have taken that into consideration.
Yeah it’s called using dampers. But they only do so much..
Look, if we don’t stop this silly iPod design now, one day cement mixers will look like this. And builders will have to squeeze into all-white leotards. Nobody wants that.
Heath and safety won’t let them be in white, have to wear a hi-Viz http://www.truth-pr.co.uk/wp/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Builders_Do_Ballet_PR_stunt.jpg
The one with the blonde curly hair is pretty hot for a builder..
Not all builders are ugly men you know.
speak for yourself.
Next time i get something built IM MAKING THEM WEAR WHIT LEOTARDS! FACT
I wonder why there aren’t more Female visitors to Gizmodo, see Girlies, a Washing machine, now you too can have something to look at here. But i must just say it is a very pretty washing machine.
Between this, and the plethora of vacuum/hoover articles (at least 5 since July) there should be more than enough for them to be getting on with!
I know, right? Today has been a day for the laydees: Breastal symmetry, male castration, pairing socks from the washing….
http://www.androidcentral.com/martian-pink-samsung-galaxy-s3-official
I actually really like that…..
They should do an article about the new pink Galaxy S£, sure to be massively popular amongst the female population.
I didn’t read the article fully, but didn’t it say it was only available in South Korea? Either way, I prefer the Lumia magenta, rather than Martian pink. But then I’m not part of the female population.
Also, I see the Google+ Gravatar trend has ended… Sigh. Orkut misses out on the fun once again…
Yes the trend evolved to the point I changed my avatar to ping, which is when you know it’s getting silly
Ah yes, that is indeed rather silly. Even as an Apple fan, I cannot deny how dire Ping is.
This conversation can only end well
What can i say, i dont feel like i’ve had enough attention today!
If you can afford a washing machine like this, you likely don’t do your own washing. And if so, what do you care what a washing machine looks like?
Brilliantly argued. But if you were having a dinner party and one of your guests were to wander into the kitchen by accident, you wouldn’t want them seeing any old washing machine.
And this is the thing about the uk. Washing machines in the kitchen… been here 5 years, still boggles my brain.
Dedicated laundries (internal or external) or whoshingmotions stuffed into the bathroom is the aussie way.
it’s from when we all did our washing in a big tub in the kitchen infront of the fire back in the day, also the houses are too small, if you go to larger more expensive houses they do have utility rooms. Australia is spoilt with space, much the same way ‘Merica is too.
I second that. Brain = Boggled
It’s because we’re not allowed to have electricity in the bathroom. Health&safety, you understand.
But what about the electric sockets? And electric showers? I don’t KNOW
There are no sockets in my bathroom except the meagre 110v shaver slot, which is very much useless since all electric shavers in stores use 240v plugs anyway.
The builders in my flat got around it by installing a proper plug just outside the bathroom door, so at least you can use things like hair dryers as long as you don’t mind the cable on the floor (which I would think is much more dangerous, but what do I know)
Nothing’s going to make me give up my stainless steel Miele. Unless it’s one of those mahoosive commercial grade Miele’s. Mmmm!
“Open the laundry door”
“I’m afraid I can’t do that….”
This washing load is too important for me to allow you to jeopardise it
Wouldn’t really fit inbetween my existing kitchen units. Or anywhere else for that matter.
Yeah that’s what I was thinking, it’s the shape/size it is for a reason beyond aesthetics, like a fridge or a dishwasher. Even in fancy pants laundry rooms the washing machine’s top and sides are pretty obscured by countertops and cupboards
so where do all the ugly pipes and hoses connect to the thing?
