Windows 8 is coming, whether you like it or not. And in the run up to its launch this Friday, why not prepare to bend it to your will, after all, Samsung is too. Use this handy tip to put a shutdown icon back where it rightly belongs, on the Start Menu Screen.
Simply right-click on your desktop, the new Win 8 desktop that is, and create a new shortcut. Paste this in the location field:
Shutdown.exe —s —a 00
Then name it something logical, like “Kill this thing”, and right-click on it. Select “Properties”, then “Change Icon” and then hit the option to pin the shortcut to your Start Screen. Job done. Of course, you could just use the new charms bar, but having more options is good, right? [WonderHowTo via LifeHacker]

This video is so boring I fell asleep…twice
Useless tip. As its easily found on the right hand snap in screen
Easily? Took me a few attempts to work out the shutdown is stored under settings.
I’m confused, apart from the whole ’tile’ issue (useful for tablets) is there any reason I (a laptop user with Windows 7 on 2 separate laptops) would really want to upgrade to Windows 8?
Why bother ‘learning’ a new UI if W8 is going to be a Windows Vista rerun or not give me any real benefits. I don’t need facebook or twitter live feeds on my desktop, I’m using my computer when I’m in front of it, not staring at the homescreen.
Haven’t you posted this before and i commented with around 20 lines worth of reasons to switch?
anyway… http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/
there is dozens of reasons on that site.
99% sure I haven’t posted before (1% safety margin as over 40 so brain degenerating at an alarming rate).
Thanks for the link
It could have been somebody else, many a post i have replied to where people say windows 8 is windows 7 with a start screen on top without even asking the question, which is far from the truth.
Metro apps are very quick. Not so much a big issue right now but once most thinsg are in Metro (or what ever they are calling it), then going back to a normal PC will feel so old.
Must be nice… Metro apps crash when I start then, several forums mention incompatibility with certain nVidia drivers so I asked myself the question: Switch drivers or not use metro apps.
Guess the option I chose.
It will make the learning curve to Windows 9 less steep when you do make the jump.
That’s probably the truth of it for me anyway, currently can’t think of any apps I’d need / want on my pc.
Yeah because it’s so hard to go onto the widget bar… All this effort seems a waste for which eventually, you learn to do second nature in a second or two. It’s not as if it’s super difficult once you know how.
Although I agree with your arguement, and I probably will get used to it, I still dislike the power button being stored in the settings section.

Is anyone using Windows 8 yet? I’ve got the DVD here but haven’t had a chance to install it yet.
I’m using it. Not sure why I am considering as how all I’ve done to it is turn it as much into windows 7 as possible.
Is there a shortcut for bypassing those god-awful tiles?
Me like tiles on me phone!
It’s not a phone.
which is why I mentioned.. “on me phone” !
and so had nothing to do with this thread
And you’re a moderator of some sort?
Pst, it’s shutdown -t not -a. -a cancels the shutdown…
