More and more, major news outlets are turning to subscriptions and paywalls to entice readers to pay a premium for content. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but almost always, there’s somewhere get the same information—or at least the basic gist of it. But there might be favourite publications or writers which warrant the release of a few pounds from your wallet. Is it worth it for you?

How to Read Online Ratings
Do You Do Your Food Shopping Online?
Where Do You Get Your News?
Yes, I pay my BBC licence fee.
And the guardian app.
I used to have a subscription, but they never actually improved the app which is broken for things like inline links and images.
I think a paywall is fine if you’re not restricting content or passing off a half finished app.
Nope.
If im using my mobile I generally use the bbc website of the Independent App which is free.
Since moving to Android I now use the UK and World News App as the widgets are great (one available for each feed). The widget pulls the latest headlines foe each category on a homepage (I have 8 – one for each main category) and they link to all the major news outlets including the paid for ones. Really is quite fantastic for news buffs.
I Wouldn’t pay a subscription for news, as its free on the internet, and on our TVs
and as Littleman pointed out, we pay our license fee to BBC so they couldn’t really charge
We’ve always had a subscription to The Times, we now get the one where we get the weekend papers and full on line access. I read the news from various sources but have never found one that is the same as The Times.
I’ve found that these days it is rare that a news outlet has any really exclusive stories that I would like to read and as such, when I hit a paywall, I go straight to Google News and find an alternative source to get the gist of a story.
For magazines, it’s a different story, but then the content there is not necessarily news but editorials, features, reviews, tutorials etc.
I pay for the FT and The Times.
Posh git
Nope…and I take the 5th about other media content
You can’t as you are not governed by the US constitution – SPILL THE BEANS!
I usually take a 5th when reading most media content. Really helps with the speed reading and poor comprehension expected of a state school education.
If newspapers want to charge for a bulk of their content, so be it. I’m guessing people are consuming more news digitally now than papers so it makes sense they want to make a few quid back. SItes like the BBC, etc will remain free as part of the tv licence so there’s always options.
What I don’t agree with is the Guardians idea of applying a tax to each broadband subscription as their paper numbers are down and they’re losing out. If it matters that much, charge for your online content!
No, I get access to the FT through work’s subscription.
Nope, I read BBC news, the Android app for which is really great. In terms of old fashioned news, I also read the Week, which is a weekly news summary magazine. Very good publication, pretty much always objective.
