Google’s having a rough day, but here’s some good news: It has a new Chromebook, and this time it’s £229. That’s pretty amazing news.
Chromebooks are an overlooked part of Google’s arsenal, but they really shouldn’t be. If you don’t need specific programs, and just need a computer to work on docs on and browse the web, Chromebooks are pretty much the best inexpensive laptops you can get.
Here are the full specs on the new one:
11.6” (1366×768) display
0.8 inches thin – 2.5 lbs / 1.1 kg
Over 6.5 hours of battery 1
Samsung Exynos 5 Dual Processor
100 GB Google Drive Cloud Storage2 with Solid State Drive
Built-in dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n
VGA Camera
1x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0
HDMI Port
Bluetooth 3.0™ Compatible
But the real spec you care about is that £229. Well, and “it works real good,” too, if that can be a spec. [Google]

kudos to you sir
I’m not getting one. I refuse to have anything in common with the people who appeared in that commercial.
There are actually quite a few netbooks on sale at the moment in high street stores. I question the logic of buying this over something that’s circa £250 with a proper hard drive and Intel i3/i5 processor. Some are even silver with black keys if that’s your thing.
I think cloud computing is great as an appendage but as a complete computing solution its nothing more than fodder for amateur futurists who’ve run out of ideas. The idea that Im going to rely totally on my internet connection to get anything done, do my photoshoping or video editing with enormous amounts of lag, have all my confidential commercially sensitive work pawed over by google and pay google a monthly fee for the privilege of keeping my family photos, just to save on the cost of a hard-drive is ludicrous
I find it funny everyone who says have you tried a netbook has never actually tried to use one themselves they are the most horrid evil devices known to man. Just enough power to be called a computer but not enough to actually get anything productive done on them.
Now, I like Chrome as a browser. But I can’t help but think Chrome OS is ill-conceived and stupid.
I’d much rather Google put that effort into making a viable desktop (and notebook, obviously) mode for Android (and maybe some decent bespoke dev tools to go with it), and move us closer to the Motorola Atrix dream, or at least give MS a run for their money in the multi-form-factor-single-device OS stakes.
For anybody that was wondering (I find it hard to visualise, so had to check it out), the physical specs are remarkably similar to the 11″ MacBook Air – slightly thicker but with exact same screen resolution, and basically the same weight.
Not sure if I’m massively impressed but it’s still a decent price. I guess I was expecting ~£100 for a true internet terminal, but cloud services really aren’t up to supporting that just yet, so this will do in the mean time. Not that I’d ever find a use for one myself.
about time. the big problem with chromebooks has been the price, but now you have some relatively solid hardware and Google’s cloud computing has been improved vastly, making it a good buy at £229.
I would rather buy a second hand laptop for less, download Chrome OS and ….oh…what you can’t download the OS. I guess I would just get Ubuntu 12.10 and put that on a second hand laptop.
It does seem like you’re paying a little less for a lot less versatility.
I beg to differ:

Why is the battery life on the new ARM CPU chromebook lower than the old Atom chromebook? We can probably assume it’s going to be slower, too. Also, you won’t be able to replace chrome OS with Ubuntu, either!
$249 in the US which at today’s exchange rate is £155. Even if you added 20% VAT to that price that would bring it up to £181.
At £229 this chromebook is overpriced
Welcome to rip off Britain
