Despite Contour offering some stiff competition of recent time, think of an action cam, and the name GoPro probably comes to mind. The company is trying to cement that reputation with the Hero3, which claims to be smaller, lighter and record better quality footage than its predecessor.
Announced in San Francisco last night, GoPro claims that the Hero 3 is 30 per cent smaller and 25 per cent lighter than the old model. To top that off, the top-of-the-line Black Edition is capable of capturing video at up to 4K resolution — as long as you don’t mind slowing recording down to 15 fps. Can’t have it all.
That said, a faster processor in the camera allows it to capture lower-resolution footage at higher frame rates than in the past, and it offers 1080p60, 1440p48 and 720p120 modes for slow-mo situations. Lower-spec models are also none too shabby: the Silver packs an 11MP camera and can capture 1080p30 video, while the rather more humble White packs a simple 5MP camera. All three, though, do feature Wi-Fi.
Pre-orders have just kicked off, with prices standing at £359 for the Black Edition, £279 for the Silver and £199 for the White. That’s keen pricing — and will probably help GoPro maintain its place at the top. [GoPro via Engadget]

OMG! WANT!
TAKE MY MONEY!
Ditto. I was holding off for reviews on the Sony action cam before making a decision on that or a GoPro, but these new models having built in wifi have my interest firmly back at gopro’s door.
I really do need a exceedingly good digital camera. Not that I am photographer, but for going out and stuff. Unless I find a phone which does the job as good. Which I doubt.
This is not for your then. This is not a digital camera in the traditional sense.
I know that. This product just reminded me of what I aforementioned in the post above.
£379.99 for the Black and £179.99 according to the GoPro site. Considering their dollar prices of $399.99 and $199.99, this pisses me off.
That’s because our prices include 20% VAT, remove that and they’re almost a direct conversion. Tax in America varies by state and so products are advertised without them, even in stores from what I’ve heard due to not having to pay tax if you don’t live in the state you’re buying from.
Actually the mark up is between 49% and 51% for the UK. 20%VAT doesn’t even begin to cover it. Neither does distributer mark up unless they are buying them in bulk at the same price per unit as the US retail price.
Assuming an exchange rate of $1.6 to £1 and taking VAT into account the maths go:
(£UKprice x ConversionRate) – 20%VAT = $TaxFreeDollarEquivalent
or
(£379 x 1.6)/1.2=$506.65
Compare that to the US retail price of $399.99 and tell me the $106.66 variance per unit before tax is the same.
Sorry Theran24 I don’t mean this as a personal attack. Its not aimed at you at all, you’ve just been unfortunate enough to trot this line out. Im just sick and tired of being expected to believe this same old tired excuse again and again on any software or hardware from the US.
Sorry, for some reason I had £300 for the Black edition in my head. I’m not sure if the article has been edited (possible as they now have £359 instead of the £379 that you have) or I read it on another site. So, yes you are right. I have however found the prices to be fairly close in other situations.
pulled the prices straight off the gopro site. Was seriously considering grabbing a silver until I saw the disparity in prices. I know its basically a HD2 thats smaller, lighter etc with added inbuilt wifi but lets be honest minor operational upgrades on an otherwise 2 year old cam you’d expect a better price than that.
Its not just gopro that do this as I’ve already said but for some reason I expected better from them.
Why not just get the white? All the silver does better is an extra 18fps at 960p (a res which no one uses) and shoots larger photos at a faster frame rate (does anyone use a GoPro for photos?).
