Google protects its data centres pretty fiercely, which you should be thankful for considering how much information it stores on your comings and goings across the internet. Now, thanks to this video and Street View, you can take a quick tour around one, and see what powers Google, which basically is the internet for a lot of us.
I know I shouldn’t be shocked by just how many blinking lights there are in there, considering the colossal amounts of data Google processes, from YouTube all the way through to Drive, but cripes that’s a lot of machines. And that’s just one data centre in North Carolina.
Anyway, it’s pretty fascinating to see the vast warehouses that house the Googles, and that it still backs up to tape. It’s heartening to know also that it totally nukes discs before they’re thrown out — I don’t know about you, but I don’t want all my sordid emails ending up in someone’s blackmail box. [Google]

I don’t think to many people would be bothered if this information was lost somehow. Maps / Youtube needs protected though

Are this Youtube video and the streetview data actually hosted at the data centre shown?
Good question. Possibly? I’m not sure how Google splits up its data reserves. I wonder whether if you register as being from the UK you get stuck on one closer to home?
I just thought it would be a pretty cool meta-thingy. It’s not going to be stored in just one place since Google always has multiple redundancy, but it would be nice (in a geeky way) to know that this particular datacentre was serving up images of itself.

It would be yes, Youtube videos are stored on every server so when you go to youtube you stream from the closest server.
Every data center, not every individual server, only on 2 servers in each data center.
