Apple might have apologised for its piss-poor mapping effort, and for giving Google the heave-ho from the iPhone, but that doesn't help get Google Maps back. This does though, and although it's not quite as good as the old native app, it's as good as you're going to get until big G pulls its finger out.
Ben Guild decided he wanted to make the most of the Google Maps web app experience, which runs fine in Mobile Safari, but won't run in full screen, and comes packing an icon that's just not quite as nice as the old one.
To that end he's made available some mobile configuration files for iOS 6, which essentially gives you a Google Maps web app that will run in full screen, and comes packing the gorgeous original icon we've known and loved for the past 5 years.
Grab it by hoping over to Guild's site, and downloading and installing the profiles, one for the iPhone and one for the iPad. You might get asked for your passcode, just to install the profile, but otherwise it's an immediate, one-tap improvement over that often-more-confusing-than-useful effort out of Apple. Bonus, want the old YouTube icon back? Ben's got you covered here too.
