Motorla has quietly killed of its vaguely ridiculous Webtop concept, a line of software and hardware that allowed a handset to power a lightweight laptop. Sadly, nobody bought one.
The concept was first launched at CES in 2011 alongside the Atrix 4G, and claimed to offer a “full PC experience” on a slim device powered only by a phone. It was kind of a vaguely interesting idea, but it was incredibly expensive and offered limited functionality, so it didn’t sell at all well. Now, it will never sell again. [CNET]

Microsoft Is Killing Off Windows Live Messenger for Skype
Which One's the Knock-Off Killing Machine?
Will the Audio CD Be Killed Off By Music Labels in 2012?
A Hello and prompt Goodbye.
This was a great concept and I hope somebody else picks up the baton and runs with it sometime in the future. It needs to be cheaper and would be better if it were an interface that would work with many different phones. Perhaps you could do it with a micro USB 3 connector?
It wasn’t a bad idea, but it wasn’t a good implementation. There is plenty of power in the Tegra 2 chip of the Atrix to power a simple desktop environment.
One of the things that stuck me as really stupid in this arrangement though, was that the trackpad of the netbook dock was routinely criticised. Why didn’t they design it so that the phone clicked into the bottom plate in front of the keyboard. You’ve got a proven, large, high quality multi-touch capacative surface sitting in an awkward slot behind the main screen.
Also, this one-portable-computing-device-many-form-factors concept is surely very well suited to Windows 8. Especially with Intel processors starting to power phones these days.
I loved this idea, and hope someone else uses this concept, just like Asus have with the PadFone
This was such a great idea, shame it didn’t work out. I have a feeling it’ll be resurrected in a few years though.
I hope so too. This concept has so much potential.
I’m pretty sure we’ll see someone else take a stab at this idea but perhaps with a different form factor.
“Sadly, nobody bought one.” ?? I have two, So thats at least one
i love the little thing. I bought all the toys to go with it, Two HD Docks and a lap-dock. It was an amazing idea, Just wish they did a little more with it. ICS would be nice. And the Linux Webtop is a little restricted. Would be awesome if before they killed it upgraded it to ICS/JB and instead of the Webtop Ran the tablet Android or even google chrome OS.
Lets hope that the idea dosen’t die with it. And some other manufacturer picks a similar idea or root in there products
