The rather exciting and shockingly cheap Nexus 4 has another pretty interesting feature along with its Android 4.2 code — SlimPort support for DisplayPort users.
Connection specialist Analogix has announced plans to launch a compatible connector for use with LG’s Nexus 4, with the SlimPort cable letting the smartphone connect to an HDTV that uses DisplayPort technology, should you own something with that sort of hole around the back and fancy trying something new. Giggity..
This is how you do dockable phones, not the other two ways tried by Mo***** and As** over the last year or so.
Glad I got a Dell monitor with a display port input – currently used by the MacBook Air. With a Bluetooth keyboard be interesting to see how much work one could do using the NEXUX 4. The only things I would miss would be over 1 million files (yup, ‘puting since 1981) and access to power use apps such as Adobe Creative Sweetie.
Come the 8 core phones of tomorrow, this may just happen!

It’s getting closer!
Anyone know what sim it takes?
I am also trying to find out but I believe from what I have heard that it is a Micro Sim

Micro sim according to the quick start guide
Thanks dude. They should send an N4 to you so you could review it for us.
No problem mate. I’ve had the guide since the weekend, didn’t think to look at the sim bit. https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B4BOlJxm52VBaDNmRlpQUlNkdk0 if anyone wants it. Not that it says much.
Cheers Darrell, I thought I saw an LED on the front, what’s that for? notification kinda thing? kinda cool.
Yep, like the Nexus 1 & Gnex. Multi coloured can flash loads of different colours for different notifications.
Ahh, sweet. It’s in a good position, I like that you cant see it unless it’s on.
Once you get your N4 I recommend LightFlow to get the best out of this feature https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rageconsulting.android.lightflow
Nice, I’ll probably spend a good £20 to deck the N4 out with stuff on the first few days, seeing as the I’ll be getting the phone for nothing.
Happy to do recommendations for other apps if anyone else is interested.
I notice the “whats in the box” section doesn’t mention a wirless charger. I was hoping you would at least get that with the phone and not, by the sounds of it, have to buy a separate one or a third parties charger.
Seriously? You get a wired charger, it’s a bit much to expect a wireless one at this price. I’m just hoping that they aren’t planning to recoup some of the phone costs by gouging us for the accessories.
The Android Oracle to the rescue
You make me sound like a superhero. While it is true I was bitten by the Android bug over 4 years ago, it wasn’t radioactive.
Worst. Superhero. Ever..
Haha sorry
I’m still rocking a HTC Desire so a little out of the loop when it comes to these high storage capacity phones, but can I ask a dumbish question: Phones with internal storage only, is that storage space available in its entirety, or does the OS use some of that space already? So is the 16GB phone shared with the OS out of the box and so may only be 15.5 GB for example?
16GB includes OS space. on the Gnex that left 13.3GB for storage
Thought as much, thanks. That explains why people are moaning about the 8GB version lacking in space.
Although, when you come from the HTC Desire with 15 MB of free space on the phone, anything is a blessing!!
Desire was my last phone before the Gnex. Even the Mrs (not at all tech minded) Is finding it limited. Fortunately for her, her near future will feature a Gnex donation.
I still have the desire… I managed the formatting a partition on my sd card and link2sd which has worked quite well, except for some bigger updates, but I’ve been eyeing up the galaxy nexus for a while. I was just waiting for it to come down a little more in price (yep, tight) but now that the n4 is just as cheap I think I’ll be going for that.
Yeah, the good news is that you have far more space available for apps as you’re not limited by the meagre internal storage ceiling, or by apps that don’t support the ‘Transfer to SD card’ feature.
I think this simplification of the volumes was the driving force behind Google’s shift away from SD cards and towards internal storage, however I prefer Samsung and Sony’s approach. They feature plenty of internal storage as well as an SD slot. Best of both worlds.
Desire? Lucky b**tard – I’m still rocking an Orange San Francisco!
Mind you, it’s a testament to how good Android is that my SanFran with it’s custom 2.3 ROM can run most of what I need!
Even if you can’t afford the N4 the gap between top and bottom has significantly narrowed and the number of excellent rom devs around mean that on the software side you can be up there with the big boys.
I might upgrade to an ICS or JB ROM, but they aren’t as rock-solid as CM 2.3 (though by no means bad). It would eat up more precious RAM though, and my Transformer takes care of modern Android needs until my contract expires in August!
