Microsoft has tried it everyone else’s way, and Windows Phone still hasn’t made much headway. That could still change, but two separate reports, from WPCentral and BGR, are claiming that Microsoft’s taking the next step and making a phone on its own.
Here are the details from WPCentral:
Information has come forward to Windows Phone Central that demonstrates Microsoft does have their own Windows Phone hardware in the works; in fact, we’ve heard it already exists and is in testing. The source(s) are known to us and not anonymous, though for obvious reasons we must keep them off the record.
The move would be more surprising than it seems, since Microsoft has been pushing Nokia, HTC, and Samsung Windows Phones so hard over the past few months. Combine that OEM cheerleading with its deep Nokia partnership, and Microsoft putting out its own phone starts to seem like either a huge vote of non-confidence or a massive power play for mobile dominance. Or, you know, both.
However, even if these reports turn out to be totally accurate — and that’s far from certain — this does not mean that Microsoft is close to actually making a phone you can buy. It doesn’t even mean it ever will. Just that it’s developing the hardware, and testing it. That’s it.
A Microsoft phone would be pretty exciting, though. Microsoft has shown a startlingly improved eye for design lately, and while no one’s actually been able to set hands on it, the Microsoft-developed Surface tablet looks like it should be very good. So, we’ll see if anything ever comes of this in-house phone, but for now, it at least looks as though it exists. [WPCentral, BGR]

While it would be quite awesome if they did this, I can’t really see the Phone OEMs needing quite the kick in the arse that the PC OEMs needed
I’m all for exploring new technologies and new civilizations, but I’d say Microsoft have their hands full with bringing their tablets to market. There isn’t a pressing need for them to produce a smartphone, unless it’s an ego thing with HP.
It’s a false rumour that’s been dragged up again. Whilst it’s true MS have some internal prototypes and reference hardware it has no intention of producing an actual “Microsoft Phone”.
Hi Mr Balmer, glad you could join our commenting community. One word of warning though, you have given the game away about your identity, it would probably be wise to get another alias.
I thought that white amorphous blob looked familiar!
“white amorphous blob”? wouldn’t “red sweaty blob” be more accurate.
That is only when he is at his day job.. But by night!
You guys are so funny, you really crack me up.
Any chance you can send me a surface device in recompense?
Kyle, I am not sure why you would say that “Microsoft has shown a startlingly improved eye for design lately.”. This tiled layout formerly called metro actually shows no design flair, it looks like they just took whatever was on the whiteboard at the first “greenlight” meeting and wrote that in. At least the desktop has other options but WP8 mobile is so shockingly devoid of any attractive design input it is utterly boring. I cannot see many people wanting to look at those screens for long!

Perhaps the reason Windows Phone hasn’t seen the results they wanted is more due to the fact that the Nokia/MS partnership was announced in February. WP8 was then announced in June.
We’ve known the whole time since then that 7.x phones won’t support WP8, only giving them 4 months of sales before telling the world something better was coming along ‘shortly’ and it won’t work on the current models
I realise there are WP7.x devices other than Nokias, but I cant think of any that I’ve seen in the wild.
Points to phone in my left pocket

what is it? and how long have you had it?
HTC Titan. Got it September last year. Seen a few other guys around with HTC Windows Phones.
OK fair point. Maybe I have seen a few Windows phones and just didnt look close enough, assuming they were Android
