HTC has just confirmed the existence of its long-rumoured 5″ Android model, in the big block format of the HTC Butterfly J. It leaps straight to the top of the pixel density charts with a huge 440ppi count.
That impressive number comes thanks to HTC sticking a full HD 1920×1080 resolution Super LCD 3 display into its new 5″ shell, which will be managed by Qualcomm’s quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro. Android 4.1 and HTC’s latest Sense user interface take care of the smartphone business, while Android nuts will be happy to learn there’s 2GB of RAM and SD card support in here too.
It’s a shame the Butterfly J has only appeared on HTC Japan’s site at the moment, as this is a dead-cert upgrade should it every hit the UK. [HTC Japan via TNW -- Thanks Darrell]

In the words and accent of George Takei:
Oh my……
Like.
Except for the daft grey bar thing at the top on the front of the phone.
Must not buy, must not buy…….
I’m hoping the Multi-Nexi rumours are true and that this will be HTC’s entry.
If there is an HTC Nexus with these specs I’ll throw my wallet at them. Of course, I also need to get an Lumia 920. They can have a kidney.
If you throw your wallet at them, there’s a good chance you could knock them out, gab the phone and get out without paying.
This is why my wallet always contains at least £10′s worth of loose change.
Don’t be silly Darrell…
Awwwwwww……
(grumble,grumble)
*pats head*
Good boy.
This is pretty! The third icon on the app bar is freaking horrible though.
In the words of Drake
“That icon is a fucking asshole, though, I will tell you that. I don’t fuck with that icon. Fuck you to that icon, by the way, ’cause you’re an asshole, for real. And you should lose your job, and you should never do be an icon again. I don’t fuck with you and if I ever see you I’m gonna fuck you up.”
Just uninstall the app. Or change the icon. This isn’t an Apple we’re talking about here.
Third icon on the app bar? Isn’t that the standard Android icon for the Application Grid?
The other third one… lmao, I joke.
I was referring to the actual app icons, so it’s the fourth one sorry.
I would snap this up. Any idea on the camera quality?
If the HTC Nexus is anything like this phone I already made my mind of what phone will replace my current one. MAKE IT HAPPEN, HTC!
omg. not gonna lie, that spec list gave me a semi.
good to know it’s working again…
oi it never stopped!
Hmm. Not sure that this isn’t just an exercise in spec sheet one-upmanship, with little real-world benefit.
I mean, 440ppi? I’m pretty sure most people won’t be able to appreciate any difference between that and a 300ppi screen, so the thing is having to push more pixels around with little benefit.
Android natively supports pixel densities up to around 330ppi, so there may also be app compatibility issues, with some apps displaying controls that may be too small to use. I imagine the phone will just spoof its density to the app and then perform some scaling to get around this, but it’s a bit of a hack if that’s the case, potentially creating some unsightly artefacts, and it won’t use the extra pixels to their full advantage (assuming there is any advantage). It will be interesting to see how HTC get around this.
Also, if this is the vanguard for a new generation of 1080p phones, then we can expect future handsets to get even larger than they already are. It’s got to stop sometime, human hands aren’t getting any larger.
