Crackle doesn’t seem to be available in the UK?
Yes, Crackle is available here, I installed it just a few days ago.

And BTW why put Android second on the list? It is way out in front of iOS at 4-to-1 devices, so far ahead that there is almost no chance of Apple ever catching up, especially if they produce any more disasters !
Seriously, fanboy baiting on an apps article…. Please just go home. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
Sorry, Although I agree, I just had to respond…. Resistance was futile.
Maybe, put it is a point I have often wondered about. It is hard to get a figure on active iOS devices but 300m+ have been sold, much of them are old and dead which this figure backs up:
“Mobile analytics Flurry has taken its latest deep dive into its data from apps, revealing that more than 640m iOS and Android devices were in use during July 2012.”
http://www.theappside.com/2012/08/28/active-ios-and-android-devices-top-640m-says-flurry/
Now we know that we had around 500m android devices live around this point, so we can safely say around 140m iOS devices, sounds about right, actually 3.57 – 1. Yet this data is months old, and only a month later China overtook the US to have the biggest smartphone market, which is Android dominated. The 3rd (UK) and 4th (South Korea) biggest smartphone markets also dominated with Android, with the flagship Galaxy’s being the single biggest selling device for 2 years solid. iPhone also lost top spot on home turf recently.
Then you have an issue of 1.3m Android activations per day, and those activation numbers are increasing month in and out, to give a number of around 1 billion+ live android devices in the next 12 months.
Compounded further with an issue regarding who is currently buying iDevices? Realistically they will have a small increase in new users, meaning Apple on the whole will be selling new iDevices to ony old iDevice customers. Meaning this market is going to rapisly move further away from them – so they we likely have 1 in 10 share of the market over the next 12 months. Before we even talk of iDevice users moving to Windows and others.
Then the bulk of Google Play is free. The bulk of App Store is paid.
It does make you wonder why we are giving an increasingly niche market constant prime billing. iDevices are honestly becoming quite irrelevant when we look at the bigger picture.
Yawn.
Old figures (May) because I can’t be bothered to hunt but 15 billion downloads for Android compared to 25 billion for iOS. Then they were saying 1.25 billion a month for iOS compare to 1 billion Android. Could that be because more iOS users can work their devices? I think you need to download a few more apps if you care that much about being at the top of a list.
http://techcrunch.com/2012/05/07/google-play-about-to-pass-15-billion-downloads-pssht-it-did-that-weeks-ago/
iOS hit the 25 billion download mark 7 months before Android, and rightfully so. But Google hit 25 billion recently, and is rapidly expanding still unlike the Apple App Store which is expanding marginally. The figures from 6 months ago had Google Play at 1b/month downloads. As of today, Google Play has moved up to 1.5b/month making Google Play the most active app store in the world, and rapidly growing – likely 3b/month some point in 2013. But also consider that Google doesn’t hold an exclusive right to selling android apps, with many more 3rd-party Android app store out there. And I can just download and install a apk file from any old place on the internet, remember it is an open system.
You are right Apple sell more to each customer, but they are losing the bigger game in having far less devices hitting the market. Currently 4 to 1 in favour of Android, 10 to 1 in 2013.
This will then cause the snowball effect I’ve often talked about, everyone is using Android, everyone using and sharing Android apps and data, if you haven’t got Android you become an outsider, a freak – the market will fold in a less than 2-3 years as everyone moves to get in the loop. You can’t loan a film then you are loyal to betamax when everyone else is running VHS – doesn’t matter how got you think it is or actually is.
Everyone will be in the loop sooner or later, you are only delaying the inevitable, and the longer you delay the harder it will be.
But sort this out Giz UK- Android is now, we shouldn’t be scrolling down for nostalgia sake. We live in a progressive Samsung nation.
Current UK numbers:
1. Samsung Galaxy SIII
2. Apple iPhone 4S
3. Samsung Galaxy Ace
4. Samsung Galaxy SII
5. Apple iPhone 5
The UK iPhone 5 release is a complete unholy fucking disaster. But you’d know that already being a big technology site, I probably missed the article
All I know is, traffic on our iPhone app posts is far greater than traffic on Android app posts. Read into that what you will.
Seriously though, I can’t believe you guys have the time to be such pedants about which app platform is billed first. There are no ulterior motives at hand here; methinks you are a *weensy* bit too sensitive…
It is a minor thing, but a minor thing that adds to a whole misconception that the iPhone is the number one phone. And intentionally or not, it is back door marketing for Apple. It hasn’t been the number one phone for 2 years in the UK – and by current standards it will likely never be number one again.
You can lead or you can follow.
Well, I did not wish to engage in this completely ridiculous argument of “which OS should be at the top of an article”, but now I must.
That article provided a link to is utter tosh. The iPhone 5 has not even been on sale for a full month yet, whereas the GSIII has been out since July, if I’m right in saying. 4S sales are also likely to have fallen due to rumours of the iPhone 5′s release, and to see that it is still in second place is still an amazing feat. Also, what do those figures represent? Units sold per week? Per month? Per year?
Honestly, it’s not that big a deal if you have to scroll down a bit. I don’t care about the iPhone apps personally, I have an iPad after all, but I’m not suggesting that they should also be up at the top.
That reply was far too long for what this argument deserves.
I agree a minor thing. But it enforces a false hope in it being number 1. Those are September figures with 4S at reduced cost and 5 being fresh. So the iPhone 5 had 2 weeks of sales compared to an 3 month old SIII. You’d think a new iPhone 5 could outsell an SIII in that period, it didn’t. 4S is in bigger demand.
But I still don’t understand, are those units sold this year, in September or in a week of September?
If the day came when Apple decided to license iOS to other manufacturers, it would also be the day that dusty bin look a like robot got buried 10 feet under for ever.
Manufacturers don’t have much choice these days, although Win Mo 8 may change that soon. If they want to be part of a collective then Ggogle Android is the only choice.
And don’t forget that Apple only cater for the high end premium handset market, none of that cheap tat that people who just want a phone to make calls buy.. Tut tut.
Times Taf has sent back an iPhone 5 for cosmetic problems 2
Times I have sent ANY android device back for cosmetic problems or any other issue 0.
Cheap tat indeed
Abandon hope all ye who feed the troll..
Not on Windows Phone it’s not
I can’t see it in the store either
Asked my colleague to buy Eno’s “Scape” and bring it in to work today and I was blown away with it. It produces absolutely gorgeous, rich, ambient soundscapes and the included album is equally stunning. Well worth the £4. I wish it was available on Android. Almost worth buying an iPad for…
Will Apple be doing a Maps for Google Play?
Google Maps just doesn’t have any fun surprises like Apple Maps – with places always being in the right place, boring.
Comments not working on Apple Samsung post
Google Play has got Greater London A-Z for android.
Anyone got a way of installing Crackle in the UK? I can’t see it in the marketplace.
