We heard Adele lend her lugs to Bond for the Skyfall theme tune last week, and now it’s been chucked onto the official trailer as of today. I was pretty psyched when I heard she was involved, envisaging a Goldeneye-esque power ballad, but…yeah, no. Somehow, I feel a little disappointed. But what do you think?
Maybe I’m being a tad harsh, but to my ears, it just doesn’t have the kind of punch I expect from a decent Bond theme. Perhaps it’s a grower? Let’s just hope the rest of the movie has more bite. [007.com]

Gave me the goosebumps on first hearing – particularly when the 007 music kicks in part way through. Very good, very Bond.
totally agree very bond indeed
I heard a few seconds of it earlier, going to give it a proper listen later today. But from what I heard, it sounded good.
Kinda reminds me of Shirley Bassey mixed in with bits of The Doors – The End.
I think its very poor. Stays mostly at the same tempo and range all the way through. It’s trying to be a classic Shirley Bassey style song buy has non to the high notes or punch they had.
Yeah def needs a bit where it ramps right up
I disagree, I like the marriage of subtlety and power that Adele conveys, very Bond.
Power? Where?
Must agree with you on this one. I dont think its Adele’s voice. Just the song.
It’s like a dull marriage of not so subtle blandness and the power of boredom conveyed in a monotonous tempo. very-unBond
The only power in this song, is that of the plug in my laptop that im hearing it on.
I agree the first time I heard it I thought it sounded like a 70′s bond theme, which may or may not be a good thing, depends if you think bond is to be regressive or progressive. I think it need to be progressive. I think they picked a young vibrant artist to kick some life into it, but they played into the Bond legacy rather than be inspired and original – rather like getting Jony Ive to design a beige windows box.
Given the reboot of the series, it’s difficult to be too progressive. I don’t think Bond should be seen as the superhero of yesteryear as portrayed by the voice of Bassey, more of a rough diamond/emotional wrecking ball steadily being dehumanised as portrayed by Adele.
Personally, I’d have preferred a bit of Benga, but that is just I
I think it needs to go somewhere, Bond today is like watching the Bourne Identity done badly. But it is all an old farce, all this secret agent superstar world had a time and place in the 60-70′s, today it is a joke. In this modern technology world with little to no secrets the secret service is boring – think Harry Palmer on a laptop.
Actually, I like it, and year it sounds Bond enough. For those who heard the Shirley Bassey hints in there, I agree, but this is bound to happen with a real Bond sounding theme and a great female Jazz voice.
The video though was rubbish. 4+minutes of nothing but the lyrics. I guess the music is more important at the end that the video, but still…
Great bond song.
I think the general consensus is a thumbs up, apart from me and Darrell. Interesting.
We have taste, everyone else doesn’t, simple as that. This song has no balls. Bond songs need balls. Like you I was hopeful when I heard she was doing it, but am totally disappointed.
Better than Quantum. Not as good as Casino (although probably more Bond).
I agree with you both – this song is a bit flat. I think one of the worst promotional ideas they had was to pair the boring, unoriginal lyrics with a video displaying those lyrics in a boring, unoriginal way.
Adele has got a stunning voice and carries the song fantastically, it’s just got rubbish lyrics. I know people didn’t like Another Way To Die (I don’t particularly like it either) but at least it had some original words in it.
On a more lighthearted note, something about the word ‘crumble’ in the chorus (and, being mean, Adele’s full frame) makes me reimagine the song being about her favourite pudding restaurant, Skyfall. Something like:
Give me trifle
Rhubarb crumble
In a large boowwwwll
Eat it all, together
Lime sorbet balls
Chocolate sprinkles
Cheesy nibbles
Eat it all
At Skyfall
Worst. Bond song. Ever.
It’s disappointing. The lyrics are so full of clichés.
Muse – Supremacy, that would have been awesome.
I love it. It’s unequivocally Bond.
Don’t like the song or Adele. Still going to watch the movie though, I’ll just have my mp3 player on the go during that bit, probably listen to Supremacy by Muse instead.
What you complaining about? :p It’s the most Bond song in absolutely ages! If I ask you to hum (or even remember) the efforts from the last couple of Bond films (maybe more), most people probably couldn’t. They were so off the mark being a Bond song.
OK, so it’s not going to be an instant classic, but in this age of high expectations (and given who it is), just like the films themselves, there’s bound to be disappoint some.
I don’t think that’ll be the final video. Don’t forget this is the opening title sequence which I suspect will be more classic Bond graphics. And a music video to follow after the movie is out with scene from the movie.
I suppose we should be grateful that she is not screeching all the way through it, but It’s still a pretty piss poor attempt at creating a Bond theme tune. If It didn’t have the ‘Bond’ music template It would be a very average ‘Euro Vision’ type song (or a B side)
When you think of all the classic Bond songs this one is very average.
How does Skyfall rhyme with crumble?
If you pronounce it “crumb-ball”
Nice but boring. I prefer “Another Way to Die”
It’s a bit meh, but it might be a grower.
It starts off strong but it doesn’t really go anywhere until the last 30 seconds. On the other hand, I’ve seen meh James Bond songs become awesome once you see them with the opening credits, so I’m hoping that’s what happens with this one.
It’s dull. I really don’t get it. Some of her songs like Someone Like You or Make You Feel My Love are really spine tingling, giving a real sense of emotion.
This one is dull. Yes its got the usual Bond-y chord sequences but it’s not exactly got the best melody or lyrics in there and she sings it like she’s reading from the phone book. It kind of reminds me of the one Garbage did, which was equally dull.
I agree that it is dull and lacks any kind of climax but I quite liked the Garbage one.
It’s absolutely godawful doggerel – and that does doggerel a disservice. I didn’t even *know* that many words rhymed with each other in English.
Not a fan of the new theme, to me it sounds like it’s trying too hard to be ‘bond’ almost like some sort of mash-up of old themes that utterly fails. This is of course a completely subjective viewpoint, its not as bad as ‘Die Another Day’ but its certainly no ‘Goldfinger’.
Definitely evokes more Connery era Bond, which seems to be the direction that they’re heading for in this film. Seems very fitting I think.
Nah, shite. Kasabian – Days Are Forgotten would of been perfect.
it’s a dog, all the words that rhyme with fall sound terribly strained
Actually quite liked it, but agree with Sam, kinda lacking the punch for a true Bond power ballad
I think it’s over-produced garbage. I like Adele’s voice…massively prefer Chris Cornell crooning to my inner homosexual.
It’s awful, much preferred another way to die and the chris cornell one (the name escapes me at the moment but it was awesome) This is dull and dreary. Also someone should tell her its called “Skyfall” not “Skyfaow”
The problem, I think, is that it’s not a Bond Opening theme but is more suited to the credits at the end, perfect for the end of the movie but it doesn’t get your juices flowing enough. Needs more range and power and urgency.
I also have issues with the way she says some words, it’s overdue, Adele, not overdoo.
