Android turns five today! It doesn’t seem like all that long ago that BlackBerries ruled the world, the iPhone was brand new, and the Open Handset Alliance showed everyone its new open source software standard called Android.
These days, Android phones make up a huge portion of all the world’s smartphones—75 percent of shipments last quarter—and are at the center of giant international lawsuits and advertising campaigns. And they’re good now, too. So happy birthday, Android. What’s your favorite Android-based memory? [CNET]

Well right now I’m trying to flash my S3 back to ICS after “upgrading” to that discharge known as Jellybean.
It’s not going very well.
I can only assume you’re referring to the stock ROM, because CM10 is working brilliantly!
Yep, stock rom.
Dop you need to restart all your downloaded apps with CM10?
I.E if you’ve chosen a different keyboard as your default does the phone revert back to the Android keyboard after a reboot?
If you’re rooted, just use Titanium Backup for all the apps and system settings. You should be able to root your S3 without wiping.
Yeah, couldn’t be arsed
The only thing I’ll miss about Jellybean is the ability to turn off app notifications.
Yes it does, but it does that with quite a few of the custom Roms. Ive been using Psycho Aokp which is closer to Stock Google JB and its working great. Also no where near as large a file size as sammys
not going well as in the downgrade isnt going well? how so? its very easy, download odin 3.04/3.07, download the older firmware, put it in “pda” in odin, go into download mode on phone (vol down, home and power) connect, press start, when done do a factory reset and job done, nothing is easier than a samsung (except maybe a nexus device)
It just stalled for a while, needed a reset.
id recommend a Team EOS rom if you can get one. Ive used there JB roms for ages now and found them brilliant. Think its based of CM10.. cant really remember.
From ugly duckling to a beautiful swan
i remember looking at the G1 when it first came out, and didn’t like it so bought the blackberry storm instead
but as you say, android is amazing now
is it ironic that im doing 6 hours overtime today working on the new nokia windows phones? (i hate them already, i assume ill hate them a lot more after today)
I remember downloading and playing with the first release of the Android developer kit years ago, back when the default screen orientation was landscape with a keyboard under it, I remember thinking it was pretty cool what you could do with it but it was so unfinished I just wrote it off.
A couple of years later the Nexus One came out and blew me away. I got the SDK again to find that it was so much better. As of now I have a few different apps out on the Play store and one of my games has had over 150,000 downloads fulfilling my lifelong dream of becoming a video games developer.
Thank you Android.
link to your apps so we can play
Didn’t want to shamelessly self promote, but since you asked.
This is the game, it’s not the best in the world but as a mobile game it works pretty well: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rampantmango.critterrollers
The other apps I’ve worked on are less impressive, this is the one I’ve put the most work into, although it needs some attention badly: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andrewwilson.carmusic.lite
been playing the critters one, its good, am enjoying it
its telling me i have a reply from you, but i can’t see it, how weird?
My comment is awaiting moderation apparently. :/
Happy Birthday! So much change, all for the better. It will rule the world.
