If you thought the Nexus 7 was a hot commodity, you’d be right. In one case in China, it was apparently so hot as to actually fry itself up.
The story originates on a Chinese forum, where the user claims the tablet was charging with its original charger when suddenly it began to smoke. Then, in a matter of seconds, the tabs innards were totally torched. Now there’s no real way to vet the story, and even if it’s true, it could have been the result of a power surge or something similar.
Nonetheless, Asus has apparently considered it legitimate enough and, according to several sources, has reached out to the user with a replacement tablet, regardless of what the cause of damage may have been. According to CNET, the (un)lucky owner will also be getting a free pair of Google Glass upon release, but it seems pretty unlike that Asus is going around promising people Google hardware willy nilly, and there’s no evidence that Google itself has addressed the incident. Google Glass or no, it looks like Asus is fairly willing to bet this is going to be a one time event by providing a free replacement. They maybe have opened up the market for Nexus 7 arson/insurance fraud though. [Baidu via Phandroid via CNET]

From pretty much all electronic products sold in large quantities there is always going to be a defect in one of them sooner or later. It’s just bound to happen when you produce so much of them. I doubt it’s any cause for concern.
‘In latest news, Nexus 7s around the world have started exploding – it looks like this was a Google plan to take over the world, and upload the remaining personalities to the internet. In other news, Google’s slogan is now ‘Be Evil’ and Apple have formed a band of resistance fighters’ I realise that this should probably be the other way around, but you make do with what you’re given.
Ok, this story doesn’t make sense, remember recently there was a guy who claimed his Samsung phone blew up and it turned out the guy had put it in the microwave. It’s stupid to pay out without checking the damaged device out. Sure for the sake of publicity give him a loner till you have done the checks, but promising him a piece of tech that costs $1500 for a beta, which has no actual release date and is probably not going to be manufactured by Asus doesn’t sound real.
It’s like if I promise you a purple unicorn pony. I could be making or trapping one, but it’s unlikely you will ever see it.
And before you get your hopes up, no I am not splicing genes to create one.
But I want it, I want it NOW!!!
Ah, keyword in this article is China. I wouldn’t trust the wiring over there. Or a lot of the food.
We always get one case of this happening with every device and then the media tries to make out that it is some epidemic.
China would wish Chinese people to buy Chinese tablets.
An explosion is when something bursts into pieces due to pressure. This melted. So the answer to your question is no.
Doesnt an explosion require a reaction with Oxygen also ?
So does rusting. That doesn’t mean rusting is an explosion.
China, Original and Charger. Three words that make this story sound fishy.
Exactly, especially since the Nexus 7 isn’t even officially on sale in China.

Is this going to be the microwave thing again?
“… but it seems pretty unlike that Asus is going around promising people Google hardware…
Surely that should read “pretty unlikely”
