What happens when a computer-literate person gets drunk as hell and encounters Windows 8 for the first time? Frustration for them, and hilarity for you. Thank you, drunk people, for telling it like it is through the thick veil of beers.
The experiment in inebriation was put together by Three Sheets Market Research, which makes its home at the intersection of booze and UX. As they point out, navigating a new operating system for the first time can be challenging in any circumstance; being a slurry, blurry mess only makes things worse.
On the other hand, our Guinness guinea pig makes some fair points, and compares having to use Internet Explorer to Microsoft saying “suck my ass.” And that’s in vino veritas if I ever heard it. [Twitter]

Friends Don’t Let Friends Windows 8.
must admit i really like windows 8 now i have used it for a while, easily to navigate with a mouse, all i installed was classic shell to give me my start button back.
and if you shut the pc down from the desktop, then it starts into the desktop, so its all good, plus i get to an app store for some casual gaming.
marks out of 10 for using windows 8 on a non touch screen device i would give it an 8, as metro is not too obtrusive unless you want it to be, and underneath its pretty much windows 7
Totally agree. I love the fact that I don’t need to open a browser to check email etc because it is all there in metro. Chrome works perfectly in both metro and desktop and once set up the whole thing works fine, which is the same for any os.
All good points, but in many ways you’ve just turned Windows 8 into Windows 7 by avoiding some of the most important new features.
Thing is, if I were to install Windows 8 on my home or office PC, I’d probably do the exact same thing, and I can see many computer literate types doing the same.
How so?
I use windows 8 but i dont use metro, yet i still get loads of benefits over windows 7. You dont have to use metro, as soon as mine boots up i win key D and never go back to start unless i want another app.
I’m not slamming the whole concept. My only beef is really that Metro is the cornerstone feature of Microsoft’s new OS, yet many of us would rather avoid it whenever the good’ol desktop provides a better option.
I dunno, that just makes it feel like a split personality OS.
must admit windows 7 is by far the best version of windows so far
the start button is habit so for my sanity i needed it lol
i upgraded because A, it was cheap and B, i do like change
i would say though that unless you want the features that come with 8 then i would stay with 7
Yeah, I plan to upgrade soon because it’s cheap and I don’t plan on sticking with an ageing OS forever. I’d just like to see a mouse-and-keyboard interface from Microsoft that’s just as fresh and innovative as their new finger interface, because there are still advantages to the ol’ rodent.
i can’t stand the trackpad on laptop i always use a wireless mouse,
Case in point
Your next laptop might have a touchscreen though…
i hope so, but needs to be at least 15.6 inch its all well and good, having small screen tablets, but nothing beats screen real estate on proper laptops, now for me a 17inch touchscreen laptop would be perfect
It’s more than just Windows 7 underneath, even. The fact that Microsoft had to basically rebuild the OS from the ground up for the new ARM architecture has helped a great deal in cutting out a lot of the crap that was still bogging the system down.
My new laptop is low-to-mid range (because I only needed it for working on), but the difference in performance between Windows 7 and Linux Mint was -drastic-. It’s the same drastic difference between it running Windows 7 and it now running Windows 8. It’s approximately twice as fast and better at multitasking.
Objectively, Windows 8 is a better Operating System than Windows 7. Subjectively, the Metro interface may not be to everyone’s cup of tea – but a lot of people are dismissing out out of hand without ever even using it, which is as ridiculous as the original claims that a GUI interface was unnecessary and confusing to begin with. Learning and adaption is needed, but that’s not a bad thing.
The gesture based controls are Windows 8′s biggest overall flaw – and that will probably be mitigated in time by a combination of service pack updates and a paradigm shift in hardware (expect a lot of future Ultrabooks to feature capacitive touch screens and for hybrids like Surface to become a lot more popular). This is the first pass, and it would be wrong to expect it to be spot on first time around. I think they get it -just- about right with the mouse (the hot spots are much better tuned than their Unity/Gnome equivalents and far less of an obtrusive nuisance when you accidentally go near them) and learning to make good use of that Windows key at last is the biggest corner to turn in realising how to take full advantage of the new interface.
yes i must admit i never got used to using the windows key, but getting more used now
I was just as confused using Windows 8 for the first time when I was sober
Did I read that last bit right? Is the only browser option in Windows 8 IE?
I’m not sure about RT, but proper windows 8 allows you to use any browser. I’m currently using Chrome, and can ping it between metro and desktop mode.
I have IE 10 for Metro… Ie 10 for desktop and Chrome for desktop
I actually also got the browser ballot box (but that is for the desktop only i tihnk)
In Europe, you’re asked to choose your browser (after installing an update after upgrading) because of the anti-competition case, but you can elect – at any point – to install any browser you like. I think only Chrome also offers a Metro version, so far, though.
Just a point to add…. the person has deleted the “Desktop” live tile havent they? That comes pinned as default so people can find the familiar desktop… kind of cheating a bit :p and they also skipped the tutorial?
I believe the desktop tile is the one with silver potatoes which remains throughout the entire video, also the user makes a reference to it near the start.
This lady is too drunk. People this drunk shouldn’t be allowed near computers. Unless they’ Macs, cos macs just woork.
Silver potatoes?
