The UK economy is about to get a little boost, as the administrators of retail chain Comet prepare to launch a massive sale to dump all of its stock. It’s sad, and people will lose their jobs, but on the plus side we might be able to get a cheap washing machine and a spare fridge out of it.
The Comet web site, which was taken offline last week when news emerged that the chain was about to enter administration, currently features a whopping great orange banner announcing the forthcoming super sale. There’s a lengthy FAQ up as well, informing shoppers that gift cards are not currently being accepted and what they should do if expecting a delivery that’s already been paid for. Comet Admits Defeat and Calls in the Administrators

CALLED IT!!!
I apologise for doubting you.
LOL! Yeah…fire sale! This isnt the 80′s. High street ‘deals’ these days consist of attempts to upsell and bundle even when they are fire sales. The truth of it is that none of these deals are likely to best something i can get on amazon or ebay.
If i want a high street deal at what i would consider a fire sale price i will visit the nearest crack den. Iphone for £50? Yes please.
I think the next one of the next comet type stores to go will be PC World. Trendies go Apple, geeks shop online, families rarely upgrade (and certainly dont go component upgrade), gamers shop online for stuff PC world rarely stocks for a good price…
PC World is just massively out of date. They’ve failed to adapt to a fast changing market, and I agree they’re on the way our.
DSGi will just merge PC World and Currys stores to have half and half – they are already doing it in some locations.
Like Southend.
you’re a Southend person……?
But i don’t think that PC World will completely go, i think eventually it will just become a section in Currys
Westcliff actually, the Southend branch also has a Phones4U outlet in it.
Ditto Cardiff. Although their ‘Bose’ littered premium audio/visual section really lets the side down.
It’s already done everywhere, I think. They recently announced they finished it. I think. With Phones4U in some.
They have semi intelligent staff who don’t understand the products they’re trying to sell.
And the products they’re trying to sell are overpriced and obsolete.
I wouldn’t be sad to see PC World go to the wall.
I must admit that prices at pc world arnt that bad they are quite competetive on things like routers and daily sale stuff
the stuff I find expensive is the stuff you don’t buy often such as graphics cards etc

Anything that can be returned to suppliers will be, so the chances are that most of the stuff being sold will be older stock that has been sat in a dark corner of a warehouse for the past six months.
a firesale at comet will just mean things are at the same prices as everywhere else… wonder if they try to flog extended warranties!
Never know, remember when Woolworths went under, Xbox 360′s at the time were about £200, but i picked up the standard bundle for £120 brand new with 2 games
Don’t suppose there’s a cache of their website around? There’s a few things I wouldn’t find if they were a decent price!
Yeah, amazon.co.uk

Damn.
this is really old, its from July 2011……

i shall show my reaction the way most teenagers do nowdays, with Tumblr GIFs

I’ll expect the store to be littered with out of touch family types and chavs who don’t have the internet at home or don’t know how to use a computer.
I find people who flock to these sales are only after the buzz of believing they’ve gotten a good deal.
Or family type chavs!!!
The Barratt-classes. The one’s with outerwear from BHS and Peugeot’s on finance.
so glad I’m not that class…..you named two brands I’ve never touched
Haha. Paul’s Botique. BENCH.
The chavviest brands are usually expensive.
Sadly Barbour branded clothing have become chavvy, as well as any quilted jackets.
I had a quilted jacket years ago when such garments were shunned by fashionistas!
Actually All Saints have a rather lovely leather quilted jacket.
And I’ve found that if you dress like a chav, you attract chavvy girls with loose morals. Not that I’m into that sort of thing.
You sad insecure person. Does it make you feel better about your life knocking those less fortunate than yourself. Those poor people just don’t get my cool world, they don’t get how we look down at them with there less educated views on the world. Your either a Tory voting w*nker or a hypocritical liberal sh*tbag. How’s that for looking down ones nose?
If you wear All Saints or bang on about branding then you are no better than those you slag off. I’ll stop there.
Must be strange taking everything so seriously. Share your pain.
I always wondered if chavs know they are chavs?
If not, what do they see themselves as?
and if so, do they see it as a good thing?
That’s an interesting question If we’re going to right a proper thesis on this I guess we should watch more Jeremy Kyle.
noooooooo not jeremy kyle, I want to punch him in the face, along with all his chavvy guests.
Thats cruel punishment for us to watch that, surely its against the geneva convention or something
I meant ‘write’, and I missed a full stop after ‘question’. I hate mornings and you should have picked me up on those two awful mistakes. You’re clearly not the man to write this thesis with. Pah!
you can do all the writing and work, i will be there for moral support and chief in charge of coffee, as that is an important job.
and for grammar, we can employ some chavs so the people of this land can read it
‘rite dis fesis is gunna b about sosial inareacsion nd it will b de best fing innit’
I pity the people that lost money or their orders in this mess. I always thought Comet was rubbish anyway.
WHEN DOES THE SALE START!
I pity the fool’s
Ok, me and a few other students have been keeping a close eye on our local store for any deals. So we believe we have worked out what is and will happen.
First, what has happened.
All Dyson products from our local store have been collected by the supplier. As it stands, there are no other brands which have done the same as of yet.
They have also discounted the old stock with favourable pricing and put it at the front of the store. IE, 50″ plasma tvs for £300-£399. Reasonable prices, but not much to fawn over.
Staff will also give you the evil if you ask when the sale is, and to be honest, rightly so.
What will happen is that they will slowly discount more and more stock and put it near the front of the store. Comet have already cleared their online store. And are in the process of removing what stock they have left in their stores. They are currently paying a high price for each store open, as such will probably shut all smaller stores and move items to the stores in cities.
So basically. You won’t get a new I-apple £3000 off. You may get a fair few items priced below internet prices, or on par.
There are a few items in the store, which are on par with internet prices.
We believe that around FRI/SAT will be the best day for bargains. However, remember that comet knows a high volume of people willing to spend money are
in their stores, and will be aiming to rip them off.
On a side note, we also checked out PC World and Currys. PC World does have the issue of staff shadowing you (9 staff to 3 people) but the prices in the store are slightly more favourable. Would I buy from there? No. Am I being tempted more then pcworld of old? yes. Remember, these are businesses and they do sometimes try to be competitive.
I should and would like to note that comet owns the vast majority of its stock. And as such, have already paid the suppliers money for it. They also made agreements with a few suppliers, that should comet go into administration, they will return said stock. This has occurred with Dyson products we believe. But on the other hand, this means that it will be harder for comet to get rid of stock back to suppliers. Comet are currently have all of the financial risk in holding the stock. Think of it as cash burning in their hands.
PC World may survive yet with their stores merging into PC World/Currys/Phones 4 U… although I really hope they don’t.
I was in the Leeds store the other day as I’d seen an offer at HKUD so popped in, one of the sales staff was talking to two ladies about cameras and it was just embarrasing. “Yeah, it’s better, it’s got more mega pixles and stuff” I couldn’t help but hang around just to listen, I was tempted to intervene as he was really talking a load of crap. Thankfully they walked out.
ha ha
I am glad I am not the only one, I do intervene on a regular basis because I cringe at what the sales person is telling them. Best approach is wait until the salesperson goes to get the item from the back then I inform the “customer” of the bullshit he just said. I could earn a living in PC World.
On another note I have very good knowledge the sale will start Thursday but who knows
wow you sound amazing Adam, I wish I was you.
A good friend of mine once went into PC World, and overheard a salesman telling a customer that they needed at least a quad core (this was back before your average £500 PC or laptop came with one) to use Facebook.
